Inspiration for your own tailor-made trip
Sweden - Lapland
100% customisable for you
Arrive in the north of the country, on the shores of the Gulf of Bothnia in Lulea, then pick up your rental vehicle and set up camp in a lodge for two nights.
Located on a peninsula, Lulea is a small port town on the edge of the Gulf of Bothnia and Lule Bay. Primarily nature-orientated, the area features the culturally significant village of Gammelstad, with traditional wooden houses built around a church that has earned a UNESCO World Heritage recognition.
From your cottage on the shore of the Gulf of Bothnia, you will have the chance to take the wheel of a snowmobile under the watchful eye of a private instructor and hit the open snow. Your accommodation for the night is on the edge of the frozen waters, which allows you to hit the ground running and quickly get the hang of driving and gliding around.
Drive to Harads, about 60 miles towards the centre of Swedish Lapland and 40 miles or so from the Arctic Circle. Take in the snowy scenery on a dog sledding safari and enjoy a delicious dinner and night perched in a tree cabin. Designed by a team of Scandinavian designers and architects, it offers a unique experience that puts you directly in between a blanket of snow and the Lapland sky.
From Harads, you will head three hours to Jukkasjärvi, close to the Torne River. Spend two nights in a hotel that’s partly carved out of ice (and rebuilt every year) and looks more like a work-of-art than a hotel. You can opt to stay in the un-iced part of the hotel though, which comes complete with classic and comfortable Scandinavian furnishings. There is also a fantastic restaurant, where you can try regional ingredients (such as reindeer meat, Arctic char and local berries), brought together by a Swiss chef trained in Michelin star dishes, all tinged with a touch of Japanese fusion.
Head to Abisko National Park, at the foot of the Scandinavian Alps, and set up camp for two nights in beautiful surroundings. Start the day with a snowshoe outing with a guide before heading back for a gourmet dinner at the Aurora Sky station, accessed only by chairlift. Far away from any light pollution, if the weather is right, it is ideal for observing the Northern Lights after a delicious meal.
Start your day in Abisko with a snowshoe hike. With a guide on hand to help, spot arctic wildlife such as the willow ptarmigan, the mountain hare or the arctic fox. And in the evening, head out on a 4x4 safari for another chance at catching a glimpse of the Northern Lights.
Transfer to Kiruna for your return flight via Stockholm.
