Built in the middle of Man Sagar Lake in the Pink City of Jaipur, Jal Mahal literally translates to ‘Water Palace’. This picturesque palace was originally designed as a hunting lodge for the king and his entourage during their duck hunting trips, but it was instead used as a private retreat for noble couples (and with its romantic setting, it’s easy to see why). Designed in a classic Rajput style, the palace has a pink sandstone façade with a symmetrical design; but there’s also a hidden twist. Jal Mahal appears to have just one floor, but it’s actually a five-story palace — each level submerged lower into the lake. The palace is not only a beautiful structure but also a great example of engineering, specially designed with lime mortar to hold back millions of litres of water.
