Celebrate La Diada de Sant Jordi

If you missed the Valentine’s Day celebrations, fear not; the romantic La Diada de Sant Jordi festival (The Day of Saint George) is celebrated in spring in Barcelona. Taking place on the 23rd April, this event is often dubbed ‘The Day of Books and Roses’ and honours Saint George, the patron saint of Catalonia. To embrace the festivities, aim for Catalunya Square, head north towards Passeig de Gracia or Rambla Catalunya, and then continue to walk south towards Las Ramblas or the Old Town. You’ll find streets lined with book stalls and markets selling red roses. Don’t forget to look out for the latest publication by your friend's favourite author; it’s tradition to exchange books and roses with your loved ones.

Venture up Montjuic Hill

Spring’s mild climate makes it an excellent time to visit Montjuic Hill for panoramic views over the city, port and Mediterranean Sea. Head to Parel-lel Metro Station and hop in a funicular for a scenic ascent to the leafy base of the hill. For views of Port Vell, take the cable car from Barceloneta Beach, or if you’re up for a challenge, follow the meandering road uphill to the summit (prepare for a long, steep climb). Admire the 17th-century Montjuic Castle, surrounded by towering stone walls, or experience the natural habitat of five different regions of the world (Australia, Chile, California, South Africa, and the Mediterranean) as you stroll through the flowering botanical gardens.

Unwind on the beaches

Although not as hot as summer, spring in Barcelona still draws many visitors to its sun-kissed beaches. Stroll along the Port Vell and Marina Vela paths near Barceloneta Beach for some seriously good sunset views or if you fancy an active afternoon, play table tennis and volleyball on Bogatell Beach (known as Barcelona’s sportiest beach). If you’re feeling particularly brave, dive into the turquoise waters of Sant Sebastia Beach for a refreshing start to your morning. You can always jump in a canoe or balance on a paddleboard if the water proves too cold. For a bit of peace and quiet, the secluded Llevant and Ocata beaches are also great options for your spring getaway.

Wander around the parks

Explore Barcelona’s parks in spring to witness them in full bloom. For some respite away from the busy city centre, roam around Ciutadella Park and admire the striking Cascada Monumental. This is a lesser-known contribution from Antoni Gaudi, who designed the hydraulic system for the water fountain when he was still a student. For a look back in time, get lost in the lush green maze at Parc del Laberint d'Horta which was established in the late 18th century, and is one of the oldest parks in Barcelona. Be sure to check out the park’s picturesque waterfall and neoclassical pavilion during your visit (assuming you can escape from the labyrinth).

Relax on the rooftop bars

All that sightseeing in the sun is thirsty work; what better way to relax than with a glass of Sangria in one of Barcelona’s rooftop bars? For unbeatable views, head to the city’s Eixample district for a refreshing cocktail at the Ayre Rosellon Hotel’s rooftop terrace. It’s a stone’s throw away from the Sagrada Familia, with swoon worthy views of the whimsical turrets and spires. For a step back in time, admire Barcelona’s charming Old Town from the comfort of Hotel Colon’s two-level terrace, or settle in for an afternoon of landmark spotting from the heights of La Dolce Vitae rooftop bar in the Majestic Hotel.
