There’s a whole lot more to Croatia beyond its famed Dalmatia Coast, as our Europe specialist, Emily, discovered on a recent research trip to the sunny country. Beyond the historical cities of Split and Dubrovnik, she explored stunning waterfalls, swam in crystal-clear waters surrounding islands like Hvar and visited the incredible northern countryside. Eager to plan a Croatian escape of your own? Look no further, as Emily has the insider intel.
Where did you visit?
I spent 12 nights visiting Dubrovnik, in southern Croatia, the little islands of Hvar and Brac, the coastal cities of Zadar and Split, the gorgeous lakes of Plitvice, the little town of Mali Losinj and the Istria peninsula.
What made your trip special?
The variety of places I discovered in such a short time and learning there’s something there for all kinds of travellers. And the food was incredible – it has a heavy Italian influence (perfect for pasta lovers), as well as delicious fresh fish on the islands and excellent meat inland.
Did you learn about any hidden gems?
Yes, the town of Mali Losinj – it was the highlight of my entire trip! It’s located on the island of Losinj and is tricky to get to, but that only adds to its charm. It boasts the most gorgeously clear waters I’ve ever seen and is home to lots of delightful local restaurants.
What’s your favourite thing you ate?
Istrian fuži, a traditional diamond-tube-shaped pasta that pairs deliciously with truffle sauce. Gelateria Emiliana, a little Italian-style gelato shop in Split, was also well worth a visit (or two).
What was something you’d never done before?
Hiring a car was a real game-changer. Even if it’s just for the day, you’ll soak in some breathtaking scenery, especially in Istria or on the islands where the views stretch for miles.
What’s one thing that can’t be missed?
Going on a boat trip from the islands to discover coves only accessible by boat. You can’t beat swimming in the pristine waters, and the skippers will even take you to exclusive restaurants that only boats can reach.
Did anything surprise you about the destination?
How much variety the country offers – there’s culture and history in the cities of Dubrovnik, Split and Zadar, beautiful waterfalls such as Plitvice and Krka, beautiful blue waters surrounding islands like Hvar and Brac and incredible countryside and hilltop villages in the north, which is essentially a Croatian Tuscany.
What’s a top tip you’d give to clients?
Don’t just stick to the Dalmatian Coast, as there’s so much more to Croatia than just Split and Dubrovnik. Hire a car and explore the north to escape the crowds and be rewarded with stunning spots off the beaten track.
