With its dry weather and warm climate, pretty much everywhere in Laos is a safe bet for exploring, but we especially love the north at this time of year. Cruising down the Mekong River, otherwise known as the ‘lifeblood of Laos’, is a particular highlight. Traverse through the shallow but fast-paced waters, past ancient river tribes making traditional Lao rice whisky and the Tham Phoum Buddhist cave temples at the mouth of the Nam Ou River. Luang Prabang is the next stop, and as the country’s former capital, it has tonnes to offer. Laos in February is also famed for its annual elephant festival (pachyderm festival) which takes place every year in the city of Sayabouri. It is vibrant and jam-packed with performances and dancing and demonstrates the cultural and traditional ties between the animals and the community. It is also now used to raise awareness of elephants and their endangered status. Youngsters will love a half-term trip to see these majestic creatures and join in with the brightly coloured festivities.
