Time Difference
Laos is seven hours ahead of the UK (GMT).
Money
Laos’ currency is the Laotian Kip, which is issued in denominations of 500. The US dollar is widely accepted too so it is encouraged to carry both currencies. It is worth noting that outside of hotels and urban areas, credit cards are rarely accepted.
Electricity
230 volts; European plug so make sure you take an adapter for any UK appliances.
Shops and Amenities
Offices and shops are open daily with varying opening and closing times but are generally open between 7am and 5pm. Of course, if you have your eye on Vientiane’s night market, you’ll have to wait until dusk (or 6pm).
Media
The Vientiane Times and the Laotian Times are both daily newspapers printed in English. There are some English-speaking television channels that can be accessed in major hotels in large cities.
Post
There are post offices in 17 of Laos’ major towns and cities. They are generally open between 7am and 5pm. They tend to close for a lunch break between 12pm and 2pm.
Phone
To call Laos from the UK, dial 00 + 856 followed by the number. To call UK from Vietnam, dial 00 + 44 followed by the number (without the first 0).
Internet and Mobile Coverage
The signal and internet access in Vietnam is good, except in more remote areas and mountainous regions. There are four separate carriers you can choose from to purchase a sim card. However, we advise you to check with your UK operator first on specific charges and signal strength before travelling to Vietnam.
