A few suggestions to get the holiday planning process started
Practical advice and inspiration to help you prepare for your holiday
The biggest and oldest game reserve in South Africa, Kruger National Park holidays are serious safari heavyweights. The sprawling borders of Kruger are home to a truly astonishing array of animals, and spotting ‘the Big Five’ is as much a given here as it can be anywhere. A last refuge for a number of endangered species, including the African wild dog and black rhino, it’s a natural paradise of epic proportions. Go on a 4x4 tour led by a safari expert – the roads are comprehensive throughout the park – and bump into elephants ambling by, learn about the region’s 500 species of bird and enjoy dinner for two under the glittering African sky. Hop over to the adjacent Sabi Sands Game Reserve and spend a night suspended in the air at Kingston Treehouse. With floor to ceiling glass, the views are astounding, so you may be too excited to sleep as wild animals roam beneath you throughout the night.
The Mother City of Cape Town is a natural starting point for Kruger National Park holidays and a spectacular first experience of South Africa. From here, fly to Kruger National Park and plunge into the natural world with full vigour, spotting everything from cheetahs to giraffes before you’ve even reached your plush bush lodgings. After a night listening to Africa’s mesmerising chorus, wake before dawn and get on the trail of Kruger’s biggest wildlife stars. There are a few ways to get up close and personal with the majestic animals of the park and if you stay long enough you can try them all. Climb into a 4x4 and you’ll cover a large area, meaning the chances of spying impala emerging from the bush or a dazzle of zebras taking a morning drink are high, plus your guides can swiftly respond to reports of lion prides lazing at the roadside. But for a quieter, more intimate immersion into mother nature, a walking safari puts you at eye level with wildlife and invites an appreciation of the smaller insects and plants you might otherwise miss. For close encounters of a different kind, you can also cruise the waters of one of Kruger’s major rivers for a chance to observe crocodiles, hippos, buffalos and water birds in their natural habitat.
Home to the world’s largest concentration of wild rhinos and leopards, and more mammals than any other African reserve, the sheer scale of animal life inside Kruger’s borders is rarely seen elsewhere. As one of the world’s largest and most popular national parks, it also has an excellent range of accommodation to suit everyone, from honeymooning couples to multi-generational families.
Honeymooning couples hungry for adventure will lap up the wilderness of Kruger National Park holidays – animal gazing in the day and star gazing at night makes for a stay that’s wildly romantic.
