Practical advice and inspiration to help you prepare for your holiday
From breath-taking views to once-in-a-lifetime cultural experiences, Peru Easter Holidays have something to entertain the whole family, from adrenaline junkies to history enthusiasts. You'll never be stuck for something to do - and in the unlikely event that you are, all you need to do is look out of any window to be in awe of the surrounding landscape.
Easter is one of the most widely celebrated holidays in Peru, with lots of local traditions and plenty of eating and dancing. The week-long religious celebration features impressive vigils, processions and holy masses. And if you're planning a visit to Cusco or Machu Picchu during the Semana Santa celebrations (Easter Holy Week), it is an excellent chance to observe traditional and ancient customs.
Explore the town of Cusco before heading to the astounding site of Machu Picchu. Cusco is rich in culture and history and is the perfect place to start your Peru Easter Holiday. Take a guided tour through the old ruins, local shops and bustling markets before stopping at a rooftop bar to try ceviche (a local dish typically made from fresh raw fish cured in citrus juices) and discuss the origin of the famous cocktail, pisco sours, which originated from either Peru or Chile (although your tour guide might be biased on that one…).
After spending a few days exploring and acclimatising to Cusco’s high altitude at 11,152 ft, you can start the exciting journey to Machu Picchu. There are many ways to get to Machu Picchu, whether you want an action-packed journey, an easy ride with breath-taking views or a challenging trek. For the adventure seekers, there is mountain biking, white water rafting and zip lining, or experience the original Inca Trail winding through the sacred mountains. Fear not – a train runs directly from Machu Picchu to Cusco for the return (or outgoing) journey. Whatever route you choose, you will understand and appreciate the true sense and power of PachaMama (Mother Earth).
No Peru Easter Holiday would be complete without a trip to Lake Titicaca. One of the highest navigable bodies of water on Earth, the lake straddles the border of Bolivia and Peru and is alleged to be the birthplace of the Incas and home to numerous ruins. Enjoy a sunset over the famously still waters and explore the Titicaca National Reserve to see rare aquatic wildlife.
