Laos is the oft-ignored backwater of what was once French Indochina, and as a fortuitous result, it retains much of the traditional charm and feel of a bygone era. Roughly the size of Britain, landlocked Laos is sandwiched between Vietnam, China, Myanmar, Thailand and Cambodia, all of whom have exerted a strong influence on the country during the course of its history. Laos has one of the lowest population densities in Asia, with most of its population living along the fertile lowlands of the Mekong River valley which forms the country's lifeline.
One of our top picks for where to visit in Laos is the ancient city of Luang Prabang, which now boasts UNESCO World Heritage status. As the spiritual hub of Laos, its landscape is brimming with temples from the 16th to the 20th centuries, each filled with traditional motifs and fine art as well as being surrounded by spectacularly peaceful nature. Hop on a bike and cycle between the Royal Palace, the old Wat Visoun and the Wat Aham before donning your boots and clambering up Mt. Phou Si, which stands high above the old town. We’d also recommend taking a boat trip down the Mekong Delta, where you will float downstream to the Tham Thing and Tham Phoum caves which were converted into Buddhist temples in the 15th century and now house over 2,500 Buddha statues in all shapes and sizes. It is a pilgrimage destination for many Laotians and a must-stop when in Laos.
