Travel to Chile by Region

Chilean Patagonia

Start your journey through Chilean Patagonia in the Araucania region and Lake District in Central Chile, with its snow-capped volcanoes and majestic lakes. Move south to Chiloe Island - just off the coast - with its spectacular beaches and lush green national park; this island is a nature- and wildlife-lover’s dream with incredible flora and fauna both on land and in the surrounding water. Journey further south through the lush green mountains landscapes of Patagonia and its numerous national parks. Lovers of rafting should stop by the Rio Futaleufu river valley - also known as the ‘Grand Canyon of South America’ - for some serious adrenaline-fuelled adventures in the water. Continue on and you’ll find yourself in the province of Magallanes, with its dramatic fjords, giant glaciers and lost lagoons. Make your way to the iconic and incomparable Torres del Paine National Park and bask in the beauty of its 600,000 acres of extraordinary lakes and glaciers. All Chilean Patagonia holidays should include time in this area of almost-unbelievable natural beauty. Marvel at the jutting mountains that pierce the sky and their softened reflections in the vibrant water that changes from green to blue. The spectacles don’t stop here. Before you know it, you’ll be on the long road from Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales, passing desolate, windswept landscapes. At the end of your journey, you’ll meet the Strait of Magellan.

Easter Island

A remote piece of small volcanic confetti lost in the empty vastness of the South Pacific Ocean, Easter Island - or Rapa Nui - is an unusual and intriguing place to visit with a mysterious history. Although technically part of Chile, Easter Island is actually over 2,000 miles away from the mainland (or a five-hour flight from Santiago) and so has an incredibly different culture, history and landscape. In contrast to the arid deserts and mountains scenes of Chile, on Easter Island you’ll see black rock cliffs battered by the waves and grassy moors where the famous silhouette of the ‘Moai’ - the iconic anthropomorphic statues - stand tall. These carved statues are shrouded in mystery - despite being first visited by Europeans in the early 18th century, we still don’t know how or why they were built, or even by whom. They’re best discovered on a guided tour with an expert who can explain some of the myths and legends that surround them, and point out the special seven statues of Ahu Akivi that point out to sea while all the others face inland. Easter Island holidays offer a truly unique experience, combining history and culture with spectacular nature.

Santiago & the Central Valley

Chile's capital, Santiago, is often overlooked as a mere stopover after the long international flight, and certainly it is less showy than Buenos Aires or Rio, but it is well worth staying a few nights in one of many good hotels, and exploring the city and its surrounding attractions in the Central Valley. Badly damaged by earthquakes over the years, Santiago's architecture is an interesting mix of historic and modern, with gleaming buildings alongside baroque buildings and the impressive Presidential Palace on the central Plaza de Armas. We recommend at least a couple of days for your Santiago and Central Valley holidays and while you're there, make sure you head up San Cristobal hill with your camera, to get the best views of the city and the surrounding Andes. After that, you can move on to Chile's surrounding attractions; the coast, Andes and vineyards.

The Atacama Desert and Northern Chile

Atacama Desert and Northern Chile holidays will introduce you to some of the world’s most spectacular scenery. Visit the lunar landscapes of the vast Atacama Desert and discover its natural beauty, including the spouting geysers, bubbling thermal springs, dazzling salt flats, and awe-inspiring dune valleys. Then head to the heart of the Andes to look out over the lakes of the Altiplano high-altitude plateau, and watch the El Tatio geysers put on their performance at sunrise. The region's Atacameño culture and history is also fascinating. For a seaside getaway, make your way to La Serena on the coast for a few days where you can spend your time relaxing on the beach, strolling around the small town learning about its history, and sampling the local flavours with freshly-caught seafood alongside a glass of refreshing pisco sour. The Atacama Desert and Northern Chile are also a perfect place for stargazers, with multiple observatories dotted around making the most of the dark night skies, including the famous and brilliantly named VLT (that's Very Large Telescope).

The Lake District

Squeezed between the mountains and the sea, Chile's beautiful Lake District region stretches some 600 miles. Sparkling lakes, snow-capped peaks and rich green primary forest have meant the area is often compared with both New Zealand and Switzerland, but it has a personality all its own. Similar to its counterpart across the mountains in Argentina, the Lake District in Chile is all about nature and the great outdoors. The famous Carretera Austral road is an unforgettably scenic journey, which connects Temuco and Pucon in the north with Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt in south, where the land ends and the fjords and ocean take over. On your Chilean Lake District holidays, explore Pucon - known as the adventure capital of the region - home to a plethora of watersports on Lake Villarrica as well as volcano climbing. Puerto Varas is a rather gentler place, where small villages and farmhouses sit around Lake Llanquihue, the Osorno volcano soars, and excursions include hiking to the waterfalls at Petrohue. There is a strong Germanic heritage here, and quaint colonial villages such as Frutillar and Puerto Octay are well worth a visit.

"We appreciated Original Travel's in-country experts to plan our personalized itinerary. Guides and drivers always early, helpful, friendly and flexible. We like boutique hotels with personality and character of the city/country we are visiting. We got just that. Love the app, and I kept referring to it during the trip. Dossiers also super helpful. It was so easy communicating with the concierge on WhatsApp. Escorting us through the airport, and meeting us in-country was also always appreciated. We recommend Original Travel to EVERYONE. "They did wonderfully in putting together a new side trip in Chile in a matter of hours and, in particular, finding us a sublime hotel when our original one melted away in an Atacama "rain event"."

What can you find in Chile that you won’t find elsewhere?

Like a spine along the western seaboard of South America, Chile is over 2,500 miles long but never more than 150 miles at its widest point. And over this vast stretch are an extraordinary array of geographical contrasts, and correspondingly rich experiences. You’ll find the most arid region on the planet in the wonderful other-worldly Atacama desert, where flamingos breed in their thousands on shimmering salt flats. The Atacama Desert is also home to the extraordinary Valley of the Moon, a truly lunar landscape of wind-sculpted dunes which glow vermillion at sunset. The silence here is so profound that you can hear the salt crack in the rocks and the flamingos sipping in vivid blue lagoons. Then in the middle of all this emptiness, discover leaping llamas etched onto rocks thousands of years ago, and spouting geysers bubbling up from volcanic depths. There’s an ancient feel to this whole place, and the night skies are clearer than anywhere on the planet. Those clear skies also mean minimal rainfall, a concept close to inconceivable to the average Briton. Elsewhere, appropriately, there's one of the planet’s wettest regions, in the island of Chiloe, whose beautiful wooden churches are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In the north of the country, the snow-capped Andes Mountains are reflected in the still, silent lakes of the altiplano, but in the south, there are gushing waterfalls, deep fjords and the glaciers of Tierra del Fuego, half of which belongs to Chile. And in the middle? Forests and vineyards, and lush green countryside. It is these contrasts which make every stage of your trip to Chile totally different. And we haven’t even mentioned Easter Island yet!

Who is Chile best for?

Chile holidays are ideal for those who love adventure, in enormous, wild and mythical places. It’s for anyone curious enough to want to solve the mystery of the Moai sculptures on Easter Island. And for those who yearn for big experiences, you’ll find plenty of them in the Andes. In Patagonia, you’ll even find Mapuche people, whose indigenous traditions remain very much alive.

What are the best ways to discover Chile?

Chile is so extensive that it would take more than a lifetime to discover all its many secrets and marvels. Ideally, then, focus on one region. If that’s Santiago, you can experience this fashion and design capital from a stylish city slicker hotel. If you head to Atacama, you’ll discover the high altitude salt flats sitting at the feet of volcanoes from the privacy of a desert lodge: an adobe hideaway that blends seamlessly into the mountains. In Chilean Patagonia you’ll gaze out over the singular beauty of Ultima Esperanza Sound and the sharp peaks of Torres del Paine National Park, a world biosphere reserve. Amid the wine-growing slopes of Colchagua Valley you’ll stay in a hotel whose innovative architecture combines stone and wood to perfection. On Easter Island, 2,300 miles from the Chilean coast, you’ll discover the giant Moai statues, whose enigmatic gaze no one has so far been able to fathom. You might match your Chile experience with one of Argentina, for a more complete picture of Tierra del Fuego, or even to cross from the Pacific to the Atlantic. And for lovers of the Andes, how about the heady mix of Peru and Bolivia with Chile?

Special things to do in Chile:

Some of the finest skiing in the Southern Hemisphere - there is quality skiing in the Andes, and we recommend resorts like Portillo and Valle Nevado which are knee-deep in powder from June to August.
