Nigh impossible to see everything in one visit, a Japan family holiday requires advanced planning and expert guidance in order to get the most out of your holiday. For many, the main pull of a trip to Japan is to learn about the fascinating culture. Although a visit to the Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto, a tour of the beautiful Kenrokuen Garden and a stay in a traditional Japanese inn (called a 'ryokan') are all undeniable must-dos, there is a wealth of more unusual, under the radar experiences to introduce the whole family to.
In Kyoto, get involved in a cookery class, and create a classic Japanese bento box filled with food designed to look like famous characters (Hello Kitty anyone?). The city is also known for its excellent tempura dishes, where fresh ingredients are deep-fried in a delicious batter. Kyoto is also home to some museums your youngsters will simply love such as the Kyoto International Manga Museum and the Toei Kyoto Studio, where the family can dress up in period costumes and watch actors filming for Japanese TV shows.
