Zambia Wildlife Holidays

Zambia is Africa’s somewhat-hidden wildlife gem, with seemingly endless species of birds and a high chance of seeing the Big Five (lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and buffalos) on every safari, without being surrounded by tonnes of other rumbling 4x4s. Zambia wildlife holidays are perfect for everyone from first time safari goers to wildlife experts and wannabe safari guides. The South Luangwa Valley is teeming with elephants, Kafue National Park’s large open flood plains are home to cheetahs, and Mana Pools National Park is known for its canoe safaris where you can watch all kinds of creatures enjoying a drink along the Zambezi. Venture out on foot with expert guides who will teach you tracking skills, before hopping aboard a safari vehicle and heading out to see if you can spot lion cubs or lone ‘old major’ buffalos wallowing in the undergrowth.

Zambia Wildlife Holidays Guide

Practical advice and inspiration to help you prepare for your holiday

South Luangwa National Park

Packed full of open grassy plains, thick woodlands and of course the impressive Luangwa River, South Luangwa National Park is the ultimate place to start on one of our Zambia wildlife holidays. As the highlight of eastern Zambia and known simply as ‘the South Park’ by locals, South Luangwa is largely unaffected by humans and is home to everything from majestic elephants and bolshie Cape buffalo to honking hippos and trundling warthogs. It is also one of the best places in Africa to spot elusive leopards. Hop in a 4x4 or head out with an expert guide on foot to explore the park’s wonderful wildlife.

Kafue National Park

As Zambia’s oldest and largest national park, Kafue has a lot going for it and is a must-visit on a Zambia wildlife holiday. Just two hours from Livingstone (stop off at Victoria Falls first for a splash of awe-inspiring geography), the park is still largely unexplored and is less visited than South Luangwa, making for a truly wild adventure. Keep your eyes peeled for hippos and crocodiles in the tropical rivers, elephants drinking on the shores and even a leopard perched atop a tree, watching over the plains. Endangered wattle cranes have also made Kafue one of their breeding sites, so make sure you look out for them too.
