A few suggestions to get the holiday planning process started
Practical advice and inspiration to help you prepare for your holiday
Akagera National Park is home to the Big Five, with large numbers of elephants, buffaloes and zebra, along with leopards, hyenas, side-striped jackals and lions. Keep your eyes peeled as you venture through the park, ticking each sighting off the cast-list of creatures. That said, when it comes to big game Akagera has had a troubled history. Despite being officially founded in 1934, much of the park was re-allocated for farming, which led to a decline in the game numbers. However, in recent years a dedicated conservation effort has pushed back on farming and numerous game have been re-introduced to the area, making Akagera National Park holidays a great safari option once again.
Stay in a luxury lodge within the park and spend your days exploring the vast variety of landscapes, from dense forests and shimmering lakes to lush hillsides and expansive savannahs. Intersperse traditional game drives with guided walking safaris and boat trips on Lake Rwanyakazinga. As a relatively untouched region, it’s likely that you’ll have the stunning landscapes to yourself and can watch the wildlife uninterrupted. Combine Akagera National Park holidays with Rwanda’s other renowned wildlife regions, Nyungwe and Volcanoes National Parks, to experience the full extent of the ‘Country of a Thousand Hills’.
