Where to Stay around Volcanoes National Park

Where to Stay around Volcanoes National Park

Virunga Lodge

A luxury lodge set on a forested hillside with outstanding views of the Virunga volcanoes, Lakes Ruhondo and Lake Bulera.

Virunga Lodge provides a high level of comfort while taking the surrounding environment of Parc National des Volcans and Rwanda's post-conflict context into consideration. The main activity at Virunga Lodge is Gorilla-tracking, other activities include climbing volcanoes, visits to the Karisoke Centre set up by Dian Fossey and gentle strolls around picturesque villages surrounding the lakes.

The Ikirunga Spa, with two open fired treatment rooms and a wood burning African sauna, has recently opened its doors to visitors seeking a taste of volcanic relaxation during their stay.

Why We Love It

On the Rwandan side of Parc National des Volcans, where Dian Fossey worked, there are four habituated gorilla families.

Bisate Lodge

Bisate Lodge is a visionary eco-friendly lodge which champions luxury and stylish accommodation while retaining all the credentials of a traditional eco lodge.

The lodge sits adjacent to Volcanoes National Park, home to the iconic endangered mountain gorilla, and acts as the perfect base for mountain gorilla trekking. Prior to its opening the development was a visionary conservation and community based project for over two years, the first phase of which was the indigenous reforestation of the two hectare site.

The lodge boasts only six exclusive rooms, all offering spectacular views of the brooding Bisoke, Karisimbi and Mikeno volcanoes. Despite retaining the inherent environmental principles of Bisate Lodge, all of the rooms come with luxurious en suite facilities and ensure that guest's comfort and privacy is paramount. The rooms are thatched style pods which camouflage seamlessly into the surrounding landscape, inside they combine natural wood and bamboo materials with artistic and plush material touches.

The extensive wine cellar and contemporary yet authentic design of the social and dining areas mean Bisate Lodge is also offering its guests a really unique Rwandan stay.

In terms of activity, guests can explore nearby trails on mountain bikes, immerse themselves in the traditional life of local communities on visits to Bisate Village, and participate in indigenous tree planting programmes at the nursery. However the prime attraction is certainly the guided wildlife spotting excursions on offer here, home to abundant birdlife and of course the mountain gorilla this is an African nature lovers dream.

Why We Love It

The importance placed on reforestation and community involvement means guests are actively involved in helping to restore the natural landscape.

Sabyinyo Silver Back Lodge

The lodge is situated in the foothills of the Virungas, the chain of 15,000 foot volcanoes stretching through Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The lodge has wonderful views of the volcanoes and the surrounding countryside. Guest cottages and the main lodge building have been well built and tastefully decorated and the lodge is the perfect base from which to explore this fascinating corner of Africa.

The main attraction of Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge is its proximity to the Virungas and the Parc National des Volcans where you trek on foot to see the magnificent Mountain Gorilla - perhaps one of the most dramatic, thrilling and poignant wildlife experiences possible. There are, however, a myriad of other excursions on offer, including treks to see the fascinating and beautiful Golden Monkeys which are found in the bamboo forests on the slopes of the Virunga Mountains and who provide entertaining viewing as they leap from tree to tree and frolic in the open clearings of the forest. Other activities on offer include visits to the Dian Fossey memorial and research centre and visiting nearby lakes, Ruhondo and Bulera, separated by a ridge of hills. Here you can walk or take a boat out on to the lake and enjoy an atmospheric sundowner looking back to the volcanic peaks of the Virungas.

Why We Love It

The lodge is only minutes away from the Parc National des Volcans from where you can trek and see the magnificent Mountain Gorilla - perhaps one of the most dramatic, thrilling and poignant wildlife experiences possible.
