Gluhwein, (or glow-wine) is popular in German-speaking countries and is named from the hot irons once used for mulling. It is a traditional beverage that is offered during the Christmas holidays, so if you're already feeling festive, why not try our very own Gluhwein recipe...
Gluhwein Recipe
Ingredients (serves 10):
- 2 bottles of good quality red wine
- 450ml of water
- 6 cloves
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 2 oranges - cut into bite-size pieces Oranges cut into slices for decoration
Method
Put all ingredients in a pot and bring it close to boil. For additional flavour, cut 2 oranges into bite-size pieces and add to the wine. Turn down the heat to a very slow simmer and allow to bubble gently for about 5-10 minutes. Remove cloves and cinnamon sticks before pouring into slightly pre-warmed glasses. Decorate glasses with an orange slice.
