Our Favourite Ways to Explore Costa Rica

Picture this: you’re sitting straddling your surfboard off Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast, engulfed by the afternoon sun’s ethereal glow, its rays warming your back as you prepare for the next wave to take you into the soft sandy shore. Welcome to the land of 'pura vida', where life’s simple pleasures shine, and stress is nowhere to be seen. Costa Rica is a place where lush rainforests, sparkling beaches and towering volcanoes come together to create a landscape that is truly breath-taking. The warm tropical air is filled with the scent of exotic flowers and the sounds of colourful toucans and howler monkeys echo through the treetops. Life here may be simple, but traversing through this wonderland filled with flourishing fauna and otherworldly landscapes really is one for the bucket list. From diving in the country's biodiverse waters, to hiking winding tropical trails or flying through the air on an adrenaline-fuelled zip line with the rainforest whizzing by beneath you, there are so many ways to discover this delicious slice of Central America. Here is a list of our favourite ways to explore Costa Rica…

  1. Hiking
  2. Rafting and Kayaking
  3. Canopy Tours
  4. Diving
  5. Cultural Tours

Hiking

Lace up your hiking boots, grab your binoculars and get ready for an unforgettable adventure through Costa Rica’s lush rainforests. Hike along winding trails that lead to hidden waterfalls and keep your eyes peeled for colourful toucans, red-eyed tree frogs and swinging spider monkeys in the towering canopy above. Boasting 28 national parks (three of which have been decorated with UNESCO World Heritage statuses), there are all kinds of trails waiting to be hiked. From easy rambles in Arenal Volcano National Park and trails with camera-busting views in Poás Volcano National Park, to chasing the challenge on trickier yomps in Rio Negro Hot Springs; venture out with an expert guide to explore Costa Rica on foot.

Rafting and Kayaking

The lush rainforests that fill Costa Rica’s core are permeated with winding rivers, cascading waterfalls and deep canyons, making for the ultimate playground for adventure buffs. Hop aboard a whitewater raft and paddle through rapids that’ll make your heart race, and take in the breath-taking views of the surrounding towering mountains and crystal-clear waters. The Pacuare River is a must-visit: it's an exhilarating ride that will take you through some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. With an expert guide, splash through class III-IV rapids, tackle steep drops and dodge boulders, all while surrounded by the sounds of the jungle. When it comes to kayaking, the Sarapiqui River offers a challenge for experienced paddlers. Here you can navigate class III-IV rapids and nip through narrow canyons carpeted in lush vegetation. For those fancying a more leisurely paddle, Lake Arenal is the perfect spot to glide through calm waters and take in stunning views of the Arenal Volcano.

Canopy Tours

This may just be the closest you get to flying. Imagine soaring through the treetops of a tropical rainforest, the wind rushing past your face and the sounds of exotic birds and animals echoing around you. Suspended high above the ground (don’t worry, you’ll be safely strapped into a harness and have the company of an expert guide), glide between treetop platforms on zip lines, hanging bridges or sky trams, taking in the heart-stopping views of the forest below. A soaring tour of the canopy is the ultimate way to explore Costa Rica’s incredible biodiversity up close. Keep your eyes peeled for sedentary sloths, turquoise resplendent quetzals and all kinds of rainforest-dwelling monkeys. We’d recommend heading for the heights in the famous Monteverde Cloud Forest, Arenal Volcano or Manuel Antonio National Parks.

Diving

Costa Rica is home to some of the most stunning and biodiverse dive sites in the world, with crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs and an incredible array of marine life. From colourful schools of tropical fish to majestic sea turtles (and even humpback whales at certain times of year), there's always something new and exciting to see on a dive, or simply a guided snorkelling tour. For those looking for a unique diving experience, the Bat Islands are a must-visit. Located off the coast of the Santa Rosa National Park, this dive site is home to schools of bull sharks that come to the area to mate and give birth. It's a thrilling and unforgettable experience to see these magnificent creatures up close. Cocos Island is also a favourite of ours; only reachable when on a liveaboard, it is home to some of the world’s best dive sites. Spot drifting manta rays, curious turtles and the famed scalloped hammerheads that can often be seen in their hundreds. Whether you're a seasoned diver or only just donning your flippers, there are plenty of dive sites in Costa Rica to suit every level of experience.

Cultural Tours

We’ve ticked off soaring above rainforests and plunging down whitewater rapids, but exploring Costa Rica’s culture is also an essential way to get to know the country. Costa Rica is a country with a fascinating history and diverse culture, shaped by the influences of indigenous tribes, Spanish colonialism and modern globalisation. Nestled in the towering peaks of the Talamanca Mountains lives the indigenous BriBri community. They offer visitors a glimpse into their traditional way of life, from their language, crafts and spiritual beliefs to demonstrating authentic cooking techniques and giving visitors the chance to have a taste. History buffs will love the capital city of San Jose, which is packed full of museums. The National Museum of Costa Rica is a particular favourite, home to exhibits on the country's pre-Columbian history, Spanish colonialism and modern development. Theatre lovers might like to stop by at the historic National Theatre, built in the late 19th century and still a cultural hub for the city today.
