Practical advice and inspiration to help you prepare for your holiday

Adelaide

Adelaide exudes laidback sunny culture and is a bustling city full of colourful events, thriving restaurants and fine wine. Its tram network makes everything super accessible, giving the city the nickname the ‘20-minute city’, so hop aboard and explore what the city has to offer. The Adelaide Oval has been hailed as the prettiest cricket ground in the world, and donning a harness and helmet and walking up the domed stadium roof is one of the best chances to get a bird’s-eye-view of the cityscape below. Spend dusk sitting on the beach with the last ice cream of the day or heading out into the sea for a sunset paddle.

Flinders Ranges National Park

Craggy chains of towering mountains and resplendent red landscapes fill the Flinders Ranges, giving it the title of one of the most photogenic spots on Earth. Despite being just a five-hour drive north of Adelaide, venturing into this peak-studded scenery feels like you are a world away. For an adrenaline kick on one our South Australia holidays, head out in a 4x4 with a private guide to explore Bunyeroo and Brachina Gorges, where you can see an array of rainbow-hued rocks and exotic wildlife. For a more slow-paced adventure, lending a hand at a sheep station is a great way to immerse yourselves in the local culture. Watch as sheep are sheered, wool is sorted and baled, before meeting some of these wandering woollybacks.

Who is South Australia best for?

Wildlife and wine fans. Offshore - and one of Original Travel's all-time favourite places - Kangaroo Island is perhaps the best place to see Australian wildlife while on holiday. Separated from the mainland eons ago, almost half of Kangaroo Island is virgin bush and its diverse landscapes provide ideal habitats for many of Australia's unique creatures, including kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, echidnas, possums, bandicoots, platypus, goannas (a large species of lizard) and a vast range of rare and endangered birds. On top of this, the coast is home to sea lions, fur seals, dolphins and even whales. To the east, dry plains surround the Murray, Australia's greatest river. The graceful river red gums that line its banks are a quintessential Australian scene and they harbour a diverse bird life and provide beautiful settings for some fine heritage homesteads.

Closer to civilisation (ie: Adelaide), the wine country of the Barossa and Clare Valleys and the McLaren Vale offer wine styles and gourmet experiences that have evolved out the European traditions of the early settlers.
