Located at the confluence of three rivers - the Mekong, the Bassac and Tonle Sap - Phnom Penh is divided into distinct quarters, and is - in our opinion - distinctly under-rated. Broad boulevards and old colonial buildings characterise the French quarter where many older buildings have survived and make for good, photogenic wandering on Phnom Penh holidays, along with bustling restaurants and shops. Along the waterfront sits the impressive Royal Palace, and the Silver Pagoda. Five tonnes of silver was used to create its glistening floor tiles, along with a solid gold life-size Buddha effigy taking centre stage.

"Our trip was brilliant! Having never been, we wanted to get a feel for Cambodia in terms of culture, history, geography, religion and people. Two and a bit weeks is a short time to get that, but our trip delivered this and more. We really liked the Concierge service. Helped greatly in Siem Reap when changing rooms, and fab recommendations when requested."

"Firstly we had a great holiday. Thank you for organising everything at such last minute. We thoroughly enjoyed the trip from start to finish and it all worked very smoothly (thanks!). Pace was really good too - not too hurried but never felt we were killing time."

" Tim and I had the absolute best time on the trip! All of the transportation and transfers were seamless, the guides were incredibly knowledgeable, and the excursions you planned were a blast. We particularly loved the bike tour in Vietnam and food tour in Cambodia! I can't thank you enough for your help throughout this entire process! Ahead of the trip, we had a lot of questions and you were always so quick with a reply which made working with you a dream. Also the trip would not have been the same without all of your ideas for fun activities so we really appreciate you catering it to our interests. Thank you again and we can't wait to book another trip to Asia so we can use you again! "

What is the best option for a Phnom Penh holiday?

To enjoy Phnom Penh, either stay at the Raffles Hotel Le Royal, where there's a blend of French and Khmer styles throughout; or stay aboard the Aqua Mekong to travel along the Mekong River from Saigon in Vietnam all the way up to Siem Reap in Cambodia, stopping off in Phnom Penh, or opt for shorter trips, covering less ground.

What is there to do around Phnom Penh?

On a darker note, the notorious Killing Fields lie nearby Phnom Penh and are a grim reminder of the brutality of the Khmer Rouge era. These mass burial grounds are both sobering and touching and, in light of Cambodia's resurgence since then, are perhaps best regarded as a positive reflection of a nation's resilience.
