Bologna

Starting from between £705 to £1,215 per person for 3 days depending on the time of year, type of accomodation and activities

Itinerary Highlights

  • Jet off to beautiful Bologna, a city of elegant architecture, refined culture and indulgent gastronomy
  • Hang up your hat in a wonderfully-designed hotel where the art of Italian hospitality is expressed to the full
  • Spend a day savouring the foodie delights of the city with a knowledgeable local guide
Effortlessly blending its medieval past with its modern present, the beautiful northern Italian city of Bologna is awash with cultural delights. The towers of the city, known as torri, bear witness to the pride of the old patrician families, while the contemporary buildings of the industrial centre speak to the city’s innovative spirit. Other must-visit sites for culture buffs include the National Picture Gallery and the International Music Museum and Library. Bologna is also foodie’s paradise. The city is most well-known for its world-famous ragù Bolognese (Bolognese sauce), but cured meats, mature parmesan and ultra-fresh vegetables are also staple ingredients for most local dishes. To gain a deeper understanding of the region’s culinary scene, you’ll spend one of your days here strolling through the old streets and markets of the city with a local guide. This is a great opportunity to visit some of the delis, patisseries, bakeries and cheese shops that have shaped the Bolognan cuisine of today.

Your hotel in Bologna:

Your home for this two-night trip is a beautiful hotel with old arcades and a lush garden that dates back to the 1930s. The owners of the property have played around with different colours and materials to create an interior that feels both sophisticated and characterful. From the antique feel of the kitchen and the pistachio colour of the dining room, to the spiral staircase and the vibrant bedrooms, everything here feels fun and playful. On the gastronomic side, you’ll find an indulgent breakfast buffet waiting for you downstairs every morning. For other meals, you can request a chef to whip up something special, or head into the heart of Bologna to enjoy some classic dishes in one of the many elegant eateries. Make sure to hop across the street to the Pinacoteca National Gallery to admire the works of Giotto, Perugino, Raphael, Guido Reni, Giorgio Vasari, Giuseppe Maria Crespi and many others. The hotel also has a collection of bikes that can be hired to ride around town.

Suggestions

Everything in this itinerary is entirely customisable, down to the smallest details. Here are some more suggestions of what could be included

THE MUST-SEES OF BOLOGNA

This private walking tour of the medieval city starts in and around Piazza Maggiore. The oldest building here is the 13th-century Palazzo del Podestato, which was Bologna’s chief magistrate in the 15th century. Palazzo Re Enzo, in Piazza del Nettuno, near the Neptune Fountain, appeared shortly afterwards. You’ll also have the opportunity to visit the city’s art collection in the Palazzo d’Accursio, a building which dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries. Highlights of the museum include the Farnese Room, with its historic frescoes, and the 16th-century chapel, decorated by Prospero Fontana. Round off your tour of the city with a visit to the Basilica of San Petronio, a beautiful partially-marbled building dating back to the 14th century; the frescoes by Giovanni da Modena (1379-1455) illustrating Dante's Divina Commedia are particularly impressive.

MUSICAL BOLOGNA

Bologna is no less of a musical city than Milan or Naples, so seeing the side of the city is a must for culture buffs. Head out with a private guide to visit some of Bologna’s best musical sites. First up is the oratory dedicated to Saint Cecilia, patron saint of musicians, which is home to 16th-century frescoes illustrating the life of this Roman martyr (while you're in San Giacomo Maggiore, you can also see the paintings of Lorenzo Costa, The Triumph of Death and the Bentivoglio altarpiece). Continue on to the 15th-century Basilica of Santa Maria dei Servi, which boasts a famous organ. The rest of the tour can be spent seeing any other sites you fancy ticking off: the baroque municipal theatre in Piazza Verdi, the conservatory library in Piazza Rossini and the International Museum and Library of Music in Palazzo Sanguinetti.

WITH A FEW MORE DAYS... VISIT RAVENNA

Easily accessible on a day trip from Bologna, Ravenna is well worth visiting if you’re able to lengthen your stay in Emilia-Romagna. The mosaic treasures contained in Ravenna’s Palaeochristian monuments are a source of wonder that can be found in every corner of the city. There are the depictions of Saint Paul and Saint Peter with delicate doves (symbols of baptism) in the fifth-century mausoleum of Galla Placidia; the processions of martyrs and Christian virgins in the sixth-century Byzantine basilica of Saint Apollinaire the Ninth; the sixth-century Byzantine apse of Saint Apollinaire in Classe; and the baptism of Christ in the sixth-century Byzantine baptistery of the Arians. Round off your stay with a visit to the neoclassical tomb of Dante, located just north of the Basilica of San Francesco.
