Copenhagen City Break

Copenhagen

Starting from between £1,350 to £2,200 per person for 4 days depending on the time of year, type of accomodation and activities

Itinerary Highlights

  • See the city, and Superkilen, by bike
  • Live out your hygge dreams down Jægersborggade street
  • Swap the capitalist crunch for Freetown Christiania, Copenhagen’s hippy enclave
  • Eat your heart out (literally) at Torvehallen and Nørrebro’s food markets
Copenhagen was made for city breaks. Relaxed and homey with a compact centre that gives priority to pedestrians, cyclists and coffee culture, Denmark’s capital is the epitome of Scandi cool. And on this three-night stay in the very heart of its hubbub, you’ll get to see and experience it all.

Start your city break on two wheels, cycling through the urban park, Superkilen, past the grand Rosenborg Castle and The Little Mermaid sculpture that was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s famous fairytale. The rest of your Big Short Break is all about food (at Torvehallen and Nørrebro’s food markets), music (at the city’s Opera House or in cosy basement jazz clubs in Nyhavn) and culture. Learn about life in Christiania, Copenhagen’s alternative enclave, embrace hygge in some of the capital’s best foodie spots and indulge in some old-fashioned fun at the Tivoli Gardens, which Walt Disney often frequented and used as inspiration for Disneyland.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Set your alarms early for your sunrise flight to Copenhagen. You’ll be up and down before you know it on this two-hour ride in the sky.

Landing in time for lunch, you’ll be transferred twenty minutes to your hotel via private car. Enjoy a quick lunch before heading out again on two wheels to explore Copenhagen by bike. A city of 40,000 cyclists and more than 250 miles of cycle paths, it is by far the best way to see its sights. Discover the urban park, Superkilen, in the multi-ethnic district of Nørrebro. Designed to promote integration across lines of ethnicity, religion and culture, it is home to a children’s play area, modern art and a market. You’ll also swing by The Little Mermaid statue and Rosenborg Castle.

In the evening, you’ll enjoy a modern, boldly flavoured and visually impressive menu at Höst. Expect the likes of beef tenderloin with asparagus and morels and fried Norwegian lobster with tomatoes and ramson.

Wake up in your Modernist-style room, surrounded by huge potted plants and soundproof walls. Once you’ve peeled yourself from between your plush sheets, it’s full steam ahead on a private gourmet tour of Torvehallen and Nørrebro. These food markets are known for their smoked and marinated fish, as well as their cheeses, artisan meats, nectar fruit and ciders. In the objectively cool Nørrebro, you’ll sample dishes from some of Jæggersborggade Street’s hottest restaurants and microbreweries, and learn about the concept of New Nordic Kitchen.

The rest of the day is yours to spend as you want. We recommend heading to Glyptoteket, an art and sculpture museum in central Copenhagen, for a walk around its glorious winter garden, or stopping by the Tivoli Gardens for some old-fashioned fairground fun.

Start your day indulging in a bit of hygge (pronounced hoo-gah), the Danish concept of cosiness. Enjoy a slow morning on Jægersborggade (the city’s trendiest street), stopping at quaint coffee shops and bakeries for frøsnappers and wienerbrøds (the inspiration behind the globally recognised ‘Danish’) before heading to Christiania for a private tour. Straddling the eastern side of Christianshavn, this hippy enclave and alternative community staked its claim as a semi-bucolic wonderland of whimsical DIY homes, cosy eateries, beer gardens and music venues in the early seventies. Of course, over time their ‘anything goes’ policy has had to make some adjustments (cannabis is illegal, even in Christiania). But, if you want to experience an alternative slice of life, and pick up some quirky souvenirs on the way, then Christiania is the perfect spot.

The evening is yours to spend as you wish. Catch live jazz music at Nyhavn, watch a film at Vester Vov Vov, the oldest cafe-cinema in Denmark, open since 1975, and bag a table at the highly coveted Michelin-starred Geranium and its seasonally changing 20-plus-course Universe menu.

After a last breakfast of omelettes and pancakes, it’s time to say farvel (goodbye) to Denmark as you make your way to the airport for your flight back home. Don’t fret, though. With speedy boarding and your Concierge still on speed dial, it’ll be just a hop, skip and jump until you’re back in Blighty.
