MILAN BY TRAIN

Starting from between £705 to £1,130 per person for 4 days depending on the time of year, type of accomodation and activities

Itinerary Highlights

  • Travel first class by train to Milan
  • Stay in a central location near the Duomo
  • Take a private tour of the city
  • Go backstage at the Teatro alla Scala
The capital of Lombardy is also the capital of Italian style. Milan’s fashion-forward sensibility inspires everyday life in this city, where well-dressed people sit in front of well-laid tables enjoying excellent food. During this four-day trip to Milan, you’ll be one of them. After arriving into the city centre by train, you can wander along picturesque old canals, marvel at masterpieces by Caravaggio and Raphael in the Pinacoteca di Brera, or visit some of the city’s many religious buildings, including the cathedral and the San Bernardino alle Ossa. If Milan’s reputation as a fashion paradise is what enticed you to the city, simply take a stroll down Via Monte Napoleone or Via della Spiga to browse some of Italy’s most iconic high-end shops. In the evenings, sip a Negroni Sbagliato at Bar Basso before a dinner of Milanese specialities. Tuck into anguilla coi borlotti (eel with beans), ossobuco (veal shanks braised with vegetables, white wine and broth) or cotoletta alla Milanese (veal cutlet coated in breadcrumbs) before a night at the theatre.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER

To kick off your time here, we’ll arrange for a private tour of some of the city’s must-see destinations. You’ll visit Piazza del Duomo and the monumental Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, before heading backstage at the iconic Teatro alla Scala opera house. To wrap up the tour, indulge in one of Italy’s simple pleasures: a cup of excellent coffee. If you like, we can arrange for you to see an evening show at La Scala, or book queue-jumping tickets so you can admire da Vinci’s Last Supper at the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie. You’ll have the rest of your trip to spend at your leisure, whether that means enjoying a shot of espresso, browsing iconic galleries or embarking on a stylish shopping spree. While you’re here, our Concierge will be on hand to book tickets and recommend some of the city’s best restaurants for an authentic taste of Milanese cuisine.

YOUR HOTEL IN MILAN

You’ll arrive by train into Milano Centrale, the heart of the city, which is also where you’ll find your hotel. Not far from the Duomo, this beautiful 19th-century building oozes international style through its balanced colours, beautiful bedding and modern amenities. In the dining room, enjoy a range of exciting Argentinian dishes from traditional empanadas to truffle steak tartare. Though the restaurant is a carnivore’s paradise, the meat-free offerings are equally as enticing. In the hotel basement, you’ll find a sauna and a gym.

Suggestions

Everything in this itinerary is entirely customisable, down to the smallest details. Here are some more suggestions of what could be included

AN EVENING AT LA SCALA

Spend an evening at this world-famous opera house which was commissioned by Maria Theresa of Austria in 1776. This beautiful building is famed for its connections to musical heavyweights such as Verdi, Toscanini and Callas, but equally important as a centre for ballet and dance. It’s also hosted some spectacular operatic premieres including Poulenc’s Dialogues of the Carmelites, and Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Montag aus Licht. In short, La Scala is brimming with continental culture and historic gravitas. We’ll arrange for you to take in a spectacular performance or even attend a gala evening.

QUEUE-JUMPING TICKETS FOR DA VINCI’S LAST SUPPER

Leonardo da Vinci’s L'Ultima Cena (The Last Supper) is one of the most influential paintings of the Italian Renaissance. People travel from all over the world to visit this monument of art history, ponder its theological questions and admire the artist’s clever use of perspective. Unsurprisingly, seeing this painting often involves waiting in line for hours, but we’ll arrange for queue-jumping tickets so that you can spend less time standing around and more time admiring the artist’s genius.
