Your walking tour includes the Mutrah Souq, one of the oldest markets in Oman, where you can explore the narrow alleys and stalls selling traditional goods such as frankincense, spices and textiles. Then stroll along the Mutrah Corniche, a scenic waterfront promenade that offers stunning views of the sea and the city. Other highlights include Al-Riyam Park and the Muscat Fountain, which is known for its beautiful water displays accompanied by music and lights (trust us, the youngsters will love it). This relaxed tour is a chance to learn more about the rich history and culture of Oman, as well as the modern developments that have shaped the city, and to collect a wealth of tips for the rest of your trip.
Get ready for a true bucket-list experience today as you set sail on a dolphin-watching cruise. The boat runs along the wildest coast of the capital, around Al Bustan, Sidab and Old Muscat. Sightings are almost guaranteed, and the dolphins love to swim beside the boat – an awesome sight, especially with the dramatic mountains as a backdrop. The boat then sails away from the coastline towards the coral reefs where you can go snorkelling with the tropical fish. Other optional experiences include pottery and jewellery-making workshops, both of which will be tailored to the whole family. At the end of the day, it’s time to collect your rental car before the next stage of your trip begins.
The first section of your road trip takes around three hours and winds through oases, mountains and ocean to Wahiba Sands. If you leave early, you’ll have time to stop at Wadi Arbaeen, one of the most beautiful oases in the country. You’ll quickly find yourself surrounded by date palms and natural crystal-clear pools, and adventurous families can explore the surroundings and enjoy refreshing swims in the cool water. Another magnificent stop en route is Wadi Shab, which is fantastic for hikes. Your traditional camp, set amid red dunes, is home for the next two nights. The tents are shaded by ghaf trees and there’s a swimming pool where you can cool off after a dusty day. Enjoy mealtime together before getting a good night’s sleep in this amazing setting.
You’ll want to make sure everyone has a good breakfast this morning as you’ve got an active day ahead, touring Wahiba Sands with a friendly local. After being picked up by your personal driver in a 4x4, you’ll begin to appreciate the vast expanse of the desert stretching out before you. Your guide is Omani, originally from Al Bidiyah, on the outskirts of the Wahiba dunes, and he knows the desert like the back of his hand. The first stop on your walking tour is a Bedouin village, where you can learn about the desert way of life and perhaps enjoy some food and refreshments with a local family. Alternatively, you may wish to drive through some of the most scenic spots in the desert, where you can take in the breath-taking views and capture some amazing photos. Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to meet local people and learn about their customs and traditions. It’s an experience that will leave your family with lasting memories of this beautiful and unique place.
Driving back to Muscat should take around three hours. Along the way, take the opportunity to stop at Wadi Bani Khalid, a stunning natural oasis known for its crystal-clear waters, lush greenery and dramatic rock formations. Return the rental car before checking in for three nights at a luxury hotel. Nestled on the beach, at the foot of the mountains, and facing the warm waters of the Gulf of Oman, this beautiful accommodation offers plenty of water sports and clubs to keep the youngsters entertained, as well as opportunities for everyone to relax. Should you wish to explore Muscat, the city centre is just a few minutes away by car.
Enjoy the final part of your holiday at your leisure. If you can tear the kiddos away from the pool and the beach, you can choose to relax in the hotel’s lounge areas, go on bike rides, book in for blissful spa treatments, and flit between the restaurants offering a wide range of treats to please all palates. Muscat’s considerable cultural attractions await those looking for a second dose of sightseeing. Known for its beautiful architecture, stunning beaches and vibrant markets, the Omani capital is compact enough to explore on foot. Be sure to visit the old town of Muttrah, and iconic landmarks such as the Al Alam Palace, the Muttrah Fort and the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque – one of the largest mosques in the world. While staying in Muscat, you also have the option of a private cruise to the awe-inspiring Daymaniyat Islands.
Sadly, it’s time to say goodbye to Oman. Soak up the city and sea views during your private transfer to the airport, then be sure to make the most of the lounge facilities to stock up on snacks for the kids, before the seven-and-a-half-hour flight home.
