Norway in winter here sees the sun disappearing below the horizon early, the pristine landscape of the Far North, dog-sledding getaways across the vast plateaus of Lapland... but also hard-to-reach places requiring multiple connections and longer travel times. Yet just a few hours' drive from Oslo, the Valdres region offers a condensed version of landscapes and vibes that are 100% Made in Norway. This trip is designed to experience the Norwegian winter as a couple, as close to nature as possible, in the comfort of beautiful hotels. Near Jotunheimen National Park, in the heart of forests covered in snow and dotted with frozen lakes, you'll stay in a hotel that screams charm, an ideal place to experience this winter break together.

The itinerary includes a dog-sledding ride to experience what it's like to be a musher, and a snowshoe expedition followed by ice fishing. The rest of the time, you have a hire car and GPS to roam freely around Heggenes, as well as the assistance of our on-site Concierge. And not forgetting, of course, invigorating sauna sessions and evenings by the fire wrapped in a blanket. This is what winter is supposed to be!

Your countryside hotel in Heggenes

An exceptional setting, a natural, warm welcome, beautifully designed rooms and good food - it's got the lot. Nestled between Hegge Fiord and Jotunheimen National Park, Norway's highest mountain range, and sitting at an altitude of 1,640ft, this charming hotel is surrounded by forests and lakes. It is a pretty wooden house, typical of the architecture of the Valdres region. The rooms and suites are themed by country (Rome suite, French room, Swedish room, New York suite etc.), which reflects the creativity of the owners, who are an ex-graphic designer and interior designer respectively. The homeowners are attentive and have a keen interest in the region, and they are always around to help their guests. At the restaurant, you can enjoy delicious food cuisine that stays true to its roots, enjoyed next to a wood-burning stove that gives off a gentle heat. The hotel is everything you need to relax - including the sauna, which you will have private access to for an evening.

Oslo, the capital

Oslo, an understated capital, set in the valley of a fjord at the edge of the vast pine and larch forests. You can stop off here to admire the towering buildings, meander the colourful houses of the surrounding villages or hike through the forests of Nordmarka.

Pick up your hire car and head north to Heggenes. The village sits between the Hegge fjord and Jotunheimen National Park in the Valdres region. It is well-known for its large woodland and lake areas; a large, life-size playground for hiking, fishing or cycling in summer, and more than 621 miles of cross-country ski trails in winter. The area is also home to six of the country's 28 standing wooden churches, including Hegge Stavkirke, which is close to Heggenes. Stay for four nights in the heart of the forest, in a cosy and exquisite setting. Its traditional wooden architecture has a welcoming and intimate interior. In the itinerary - Snowshoeing and ice fishing to really get into the spirit of the traditions of the Far North. Snowshoes on, you'll leave your gear to be carried by the sled and set off for a walk to a frozen lake, where you'll learn how to ice fish. In the itinerary – Dog-sledding safari around Beitolstolen, mushing your own pack of dogs. This tour is suitable for everyone, whether you are with your partner, family or friends. No experience required. In the itinerary - There's nothing like a private sauna for an evening to recharge your batteries after a day hiking the snow-covered forests.

Return to Oslo and drop off hire car. Return flight.
