Winter

October – February

The winter sun brings the peak tourist season in Central India, and for good reason. The weather is mild and pleasant, making it an ideal time to explore the many attractions of the region. The winter months are the best time to visit Central India if you’re keen to set off on a wildlife safari in national parks such as Bandhavgarh and Kanha. This is the time when tigers and other animals are most easily spotted, and the weather makes for cool, comfortable game drives. While the cities of Raipur, Bhopal, and Gwalior may not be popular winter destinations, it's a great time to discover the ancient temples, forts and monuments without dealing without the heat and crowds. The Festival of Light, or Diwali as it's popularly known, falls in either October or November, and is celebrated with great gusto across Central India. During this time, the region is alive with colour, light and festivities making it a great time to immerse yourself in the local culture and witness the region's lively customs.

Original Travel Top Tip: Book your wildlife safaris in advance with an expert guide and knowledgeable ranger, to ensure a front-row seat to the action.

Spring

March – May

As winter’s chill gives way to spring sunshine, Central India awakens to a symphony of vibrant colours and fragrant blooms. The lush greenery and kaleidoscope of flowers that emerge during the spring months create a mesmerising landscape that is a feast for the eyes. This is also the dry season in Central India, making it the perfect time for wildlife fanatics to embark on a journey to Bandhavgarh National Park, where majestic tigers and elusive leopards roam free. The park's dense forests are alive with the sounds of chirping birds and rustling leaves, making every step feel like a wild adventure. The best months for tiger spotting are April, May and June, as the temperature soars and the tigers come out in search of remaining water sources. Along with Bandhavgarh, spring is also the best time to visit other national parks in the region, such as Ranthambore National Park and Kanha, to witness the diverse flora and fauna that Central India has to offer. However, it's important to note that temperatures can soar up to 40°C and above, so this season is not for the faint-hearted.

Original Travel Top Tip: Pack comfortable and breathable clothing suitable for the weather and your favourite snacks for the long safari drives.

Summer

June – September

Summer brings heavy rainfall to Central India during the monsoon months of July, August and September. While this might not be the best time to visit Central India, there is a unique charm to the region during the wet and wild months. The hills and forests of Madhya Pradesh transform into a lush, verdant landscape straight out of a fairy tale, with waterfalls cascading through canyons, creating ideal conditions for white water rafting enthusiasts. However, it's important to keep in mind that roads can flood during the monsoon season, so it's wise to plan ahead and allow for some flexibility in case of unexpected road closures. Bandhavgarh and Ranthambore National Parks are closed during the monsoon months of July, August and September, allowing the animals to have some peace during the stormy season — and saving the park rangers from rescuing visitors from getting quite literally stuck in the mud.

Original Travel Top Tip: Be prepared for sudden rain showers and keep an umbrella handy during monsoon season.
