With the London marathon finishing last weekend, a quick dabble in skeleton bobsledding (just us?) and a new found passion for netball after the Commonwealth Games we at Original Travel HQ are feeling rather sporty. And whilst watching on our telly boxes with a cuppa is always fun, nothing beats being part of the action, which got us thinking about great sporting events across the globe...
Vogalonga, Venice
This amateur regatta is one of the most loved in Venice, where any type of rowing boat can enter the non-competitive race which weaves through the scenic canals of the city and out into the lagoon towards Burano. Literally meaning 'Long Row' the diverse range of boats from kayaks to dragonboats makes for a colourful scene. Witness the excitement from the safety of a waterside bar, Aperol spritz in hand, or if you are feeling brave; everyone is welcome to compete!
Maasai Olympics, Kenya
The Maasai Olympics are a sports competition based upon traditional warrior skills, shifting away from traditional lion hunting towards medal hunting in an aim to conserve the lion and wildlife population in Kenya. 25 athletes from four warrior villages compete in events such as javelin, running and high jumping for recognition and potentially to become leaders of the villages. Stay in Ol Donyo Lodge, nestled in the savannah plains, and enjoy watching this fascinating piece of history on 15th December.
Rugby World Cup, Japan
We have arranged some superb itineraries for guests who have tickets to the Rugby World Cup. Possibly one of the most diverse countries on the planet, Japan leaves you smitten and our carefully thought out itineraries even more so! Our favourite route focuses on the main island of Honshu taking in the best of tech, skyscrapers and bustling cities combined with zen gardens, ancient capitals and rural ryokans. All before a couple of thrilling rugby games to end the trip in style.
US Open, Pebble Beach
The US Open in 2019 will take place at what is surely one of the most scenic courses in the world, Pebble Beach Resort, which was also historically the first public access course to host this world renowned competition. If you are lucky enough to have tickets, we would recommend beginning your trip in understated and hipster San Francisco before setting out on an iconic Big Sur road trip - feel the wind in your hair as you cruise down the dramatic coastlines before stopping into Pebble Beach to admire the golfing prowess.
Cricket, Sri Lanka
England are touring Sri Lanka in November, playing tests in Dambulla, Galle & Kandy, which conveniently means travellers can add a match or two into their travel itinerary. A great opportunity to enjoy a wonderful sport in a truly unique country combined with culture, beaches and nature. The perfect destination for a sporting holiday!
