Glamping in India: Our Favourite Spots

Glamping in India: Our Favourite Spots

There’s no disputing that camping is one of the easiest ways to connect with nature. Pitching tents in remote locations, with only wildlife for company is total bliss for some. But there’s a rising number of self-proclaimed ‘glampers’ that would liken this outdoor pursuit to a modern-day form of torture. Paper-thin tent walls, questionable meals and communal bathrooms naturally aren’t for all. Some demand a little more luxury from their biophilia (or affinity for nature) experiences, instead, favouring plush mod cons and glamp-sites you’d be forgiven for thinking were five-star hotels. And you may be surprised to learn that glamping in India is becoming a popular pastime. There’s luxury glamp accommodation, commitments to the local community, freshly-sourced meals and more, all offering a haven away from the tourist hordes. So, succumb to the allure of the remote animal sanctuaries of Dera Amer, the promise of untouched natural beauty in Jamtara and plentiful supply of wilderness in the camp of Suján Jawai — it won't be long before you announce you’ve gone glamping.

Dera Amer

The Singh family acquired 180 acres of largely neglected scrubland back in 1981, with the promise to return this patch of potential into a state of untouched natural beauty, where its wildlife and human population could coexist happily. Since then, Dera Amer has become the ultimate off-grid experience, with six luxe safari-style tents offering guests more than just the creature comforts. There are bespoke Raj-era furnishings, locally made Cawnpore Cots and planters chairs (perfect for reclining), roaring bonfires, plenty of complimentary forest essentials toiletries and, of course, elephants. These gentle giants roam the land and guests are allowed to help bathe and explore alongside them and if you’re lucky they might even join you for dinner. You can also explore the surrounding village, go birdwatching, take a dip in the pool or enjoy the serenity of strolling the land.

Raas Chhatrasagar

Luxury tents have always played an important role in the Rajput lifestyle. Constant safari campaigns in far-flung lands often meant long tent stays in some questionable or even inhospitable conditions. Until glamping in India was born. Now plush tent structures offer an understated chicness, with soft muted tones, air-con, heating and fantastic fine-dining options. Raas Chhatrasagar is no exception, with guests able to birdwatch, walk, rewild and feel part of a farming community, while on-site naturalists and experts share their wealth of knowledge and experience. Stroll to the camp’s lake, jeep ride through grasslands and spy myriad bird species and herds of blue bull before finding yourself under a canopy of stars, glass in hand and tucking into a culinary feast made from locally-sourced produce and age-old family recipes.
