Tierra Patagonia
Tierra Patagonia is just 15 minutes' drive from the entrance to Torres del Paine National Park, set on a bluff where the pampas meet Lake Sarmiento, and with amazing views of the peaks of the national park.
The hotel is the spanking new sister property of Tierra Atacama in the eponymous desert of Northern Chile and is designed to blend into the dramatic Patagonian surroundings, barely disrupting the landscape.
Inside, a cosy open plan lounge and fireplace await, and there are just 40 comfortable rooms situated along two corridors with stunning views across a lake to the mountains. The bar and dining room share the views.
The Uma Spa offers a variety of different treatments and massages and also has a sauna, steam room, indoor heated swimming pool, and an outdoor jacuzzi for those wanting to brave the elements.
The hotel arranges full day or half day excursions and expert guides are on hand to help spot endemic plants, animals and birds whilst exploring the diverse landscapes of Patagonia, from mountains, pampas, forests, ridges, glaciers, rivers, lakes and waterfalls. The specific excursions include walks, treks, riding, mountain biking and boat trips.
Why We Love It
The hotel is near the shoreline of Lake Sarmiento and, if you're feeling brave, why not go for a bracing swim? The less adventurous/foolhardy can wander along the beautiful beach spotting ñandues, indigenous ostrich-like birds.
Awasi Patagonia
This luxury lodge in Patagonia provides an unrivalled base from which to discover the wild and remote Torres del Paine National Park.
There are just 12 intimate villas (11 with one bedroom and one with two doubles) inspired by old estate outposts and constructed of local wood in dense native forests within a private 15 000 acre reserve. Each villa boasts a comfortable living room with wood-burning stove, a hot tub, and memorable views across the magnificent Torres, glacial lakes and vast steppes.
Following in the impressive footsteps of its sister hotel in Atacama, a member of the prestigious Relais and Chateaux family for its acclaimed local cuisine, the private restaurant will serve top quality regional gastronomy incorporating gourmet flavours and textures.
A 4x4 and excursion guide is provided for each villa so you can explore this iconic destination at your own pace and with an itinerary tailored to your personal interests and preferences.
The lodge is strategically located so guests can discover the abundant flora and fauna of this world biosphere zone, such as nandu and puma, while wandering along any of several scenic walking trails.
Why We Love It
The British explorer Florence Dixie marvelled at this spectacular but desolate landscape when she camped at this site in 1879, writing that 'the sight well repaid us for our trouble.' It will you too, we suspect.
