Costa Rica is well-known for its sustainable, yet luxurious, accommodation options – to help you decide, we've compiled a list of our favourite luxury hotels in Tortuguero National Park.
Manatus
There are no roads in Tortuguero, so access to Manatus involves a two-hour boat trip through the canals and waterways that criss-cross the park.
Once you reach the lodge, you can enjoy this natural refuge in great comfort. The air-conditioned rooms have private terraces and outdoor showers, with facilities including a swimming pool, billiard table and massage service. The restaurant serves Afro-Caribbean cuisine, as well as more traditional dishes. Activities at Manatus focus on exploring the rich jungle and marine life of Tortuguero - one of Costa Rica's most diverse national parks - with a knowledgeable guide. Fishing, kayaking, birdwatching and tours of the rainforest canopy are all available.
Why We Love It
Tortuguero is also one of the most important nesting sites for the Atlantic green turtle, which can be seen between July and October.
Tortuga Lodge
Tortuga Lodge sits on 50 acres of private land on Costa Rica's Northeast Caribbean coast.
The lodge's restaurant is located at the river dock so you can be entertained by the wildlife as you eat. The chef, Valentin, specializes in local and international dishes. Designed to blend into the river environment, the pool features an environmentally-friendly purification system that uses an undetectable amount of salt instead of commercial chlorine. Its botanical gardens feature palms, orchids and heliconias. The best way to explore the forest is by boat, paddling slowly and silently along the rivers and observing wildlife. Originally intended to protect a major nesting beach of the Atlantic green sea turtle, Tortuguero National Park now protects 51,870 acres, one of the last large areas of tropical rain forest in Central America.
Why We Love It
The hotel has an energy conservation program that saves on average half of the overall electrical energy consumption at the lodge.
