Fun? Too obvious. It’s all about Type II Fun now, where the actual doing might not feel like fun (like climbing a mountain or going white-water rafting), but the feeling after is pure exhilaration and an overwhelming sense of achievement. They’re the experiences that challenge you in the moment but are fun to reminisce about afterwards and often make the best travel tales. Read on for a selection of our favourite destinations around the world for some Type II Fun – Original Travel style...
Track wild bison
Lace up your hiking boots and venture into the wilds of Transylvania for a safari-style adventure. Track wild bison, camp under the stars and hike in Piatra Craiului National Park where wolves, bears and lynx still roam. Despite tipping the scales at 1,400lbs and standing 6ft tall, you might think bison would be easy to spot – but think again. Their ability to melt into the forest’s vegetation makes them tricky to find, but equally, it makes the feeling of doing so all the more rewarding.

Ride the rapids
On a family trip, challenge the clan with a hike in the Andes and adrenaline-inducing white water rafting on the Urubamba River. You might find yourself soggy and exhausted at the bottom of the valley, but trust us, this is something worth bragging about in the playground. We can also extend your trip to include lodge-to-lodge trekking on the Salkantay trail, the secret route to Machu Picchu.
Climb Mount Kinabalu
On an adventure-filled trip to Malaysia, climb Mount Kinabalu with an experienced mountain guide. The two-day trek passes through waterfalls and thick forests, finishing with a scenic sleep in Laban Rata on day one. The following 1.30am wake-up call (you heard that right) to reach the summit may leave you yawning, but believe us, it's the epitome of Type II Fun and worth every minute of interrupted sleep for the spectacular sunrise views.
Walk on the wild side
Wonder at wildlife on this epic trip to Zambia. Highlights include stays in luxurious camps, a sleep-out under the stars, and a heart-pumping walking safari in the South Luangwa where your expert guide will help you spot big game and rare flora and fauna. The early morning starts, bumpy 4x4 rides and patience needed to spot wildlife will be nothing but fading memories when you capture swoon-worthy photos of leopards, elephants and hippos.
