Asia is brimming with diversity, from its far-flung islands to its fast-paced metropolises and snow-capped mountain ranges. Whether you’re after history, culture, beaches or adventure, the continent certainly delivers. When it comes to visiting Asia in summer, though, some might be put off by the sweltering heat or threat of monsoon rains hanging over the region. Luckily, navigating weather conditions is our expertise, and our team can recommend the best corners of the continent to check out during summer. Read on for the lowdown…

Indonesia
First up on our list of where to visit in Asia in summer is the world’s largest island chain, Indonesia. Thanks to its tropical climate, these 17,000-plus islands enjoy a dry season from May to December, making summer the best time to visit. But where to go? Bali boasts 25-30°C temperatures, perfect for exploring lush rice paddies and lounging on beautiful beaches. The island also hosts a variety of festivals in the summer, including the Nusa Dua Light Festival and the Ubud Village Jazz Festival. After Bali, hop between the tiny trio of Gili islands – Trawangan, Meno and Air – for a pint-sized slice of paradise. For a quieter alternative, visit Sumba, where crystalline waters lap powdery white sand and the summer swell is a surfer’s dream. Likewise, destinations such as Lombok, Komodo and Sumatra all offer something special during summer, be it lush national parks, deserted beaches or wondrous wildlife.

Vietnam
While much of Vietnam experiences torrential downpours during summer, there are pockets of sunshine which are well worth seeking out. Our advice? Skip rainy Ho Chi Minh City and head for balmy Nha Trang on the central coast to enjoy some of the country's best (rain-free) beaches. If you don’t mind the occasional – heavy but brief – shower, make for the mountainous northern region of Sa Pa for emerald rice terrace vistas and undulating hills. Away from the mainland, travel to the tropical islands of Phu Quoc and the Con Dao archipelago off Vietnam’s southern coast. Although prone to monsoon rains during summer, these tend to last only a few minutes before the sun breaks through the clouds again. Another great destination in Asia in summer is Da Lat, nestled in Vietnam’s Central Highlands. Explore dense jungles, serene lakes and cascading waterfalls in this 'City of Eternal Spring'.
Thailand
Seeking a sunny slice of Thailand during summer? Head to the Koh Samui archipelago and you’ll avoid the annual rains engulfing the mainland. Located off Thailand’s east coast, this archipelago consists of three islands. The largest, Koh Samui, has everything from swanky beach resorts to hidden jungle gems. While away the hours on palm-fringed beaches or take a boat trip to Ang Thong Marine National Park for some sensational snorkelling. On Koh Pha-Ngan, partygoers can dance the night away at the infamous full moon parties held monthly on Haad Rin Beach. Beyond the backpackers, plenty of quiet corners await discovery, such as the tranquil Haad Salad or Mae Haad Beach. For the adventurous, Koh Tao is the best place in the world to become a certified scuba diver, with its turquoise waters teeming with life and colourful coral reefs. Visit in early June to be in with the highest chance of swimming alongside majestic whale sharks.

Sri Lanka
Like other destinations in Asia in summer, Sri Lanka experiences a wet season. However, a quirk of this isle’s climate means that while one side receives downpours, the other is blessed with sunshine. In summer, your best bet is northern and eastern Sri Lanka. Must-sees in the north include Wilpattu National Park (the country’s largest), which reopened in 2010 and attracts far fewer tourists than Yala. Head out on a private safari, and you’ll be in for the chance of spotting sloth bears, leopards, elephants and more. The under-the-radar east coast beaches are also spectacular. Base yourself in the historic port city of Trincomalee, and you’ll have golden sand beauties like Nilaveli and Uppuveli on your doorstep. The city is also peppered with Hindu temples and colonial architecture and is a wonderful whale-watching destination (between May and October). Further north, the city of Jaffna boasts a fascinating history and is a cradle of Hindu culture and tradition.
Malaysia
Last (but by no means least) on our list of where to go in Asia in summer is Malaysia. We recommend sticking to the country’s beautiful east coast to avoid the seasonal rain. This coastline is also home to a cluster of dreamlike islands, such as the otherworldly Perhentian Islands, which belong to a protected marine reserve and have cyan-blue waters that are thriving with aquatic life. Another east coast idyll in Malaysia is the laidback Tioman Island, where lush rainforest and towering palms overlook silky white sand beaches. For wildlife enthusiasts, July and August are the most popular times to visit Malaysian Borneo, when orangutans are most active and turtle season is in full swing. If you’re after a culture fix, visit lively Kuala Lumpur, which experiences pleasant weather in July, making it an ideal time to wander the city’s iconic sites.
