Portugal may not be the first place that springs to mind when you think of a European honeymoon but, for such a small country, it packs quite the punch in terms of scenery, romantic experiences and newly-wed friendly accommodation. If you want a honeymoon in the vein of a traditional fly and flop then look no further than the Algarve, home to glorious beaches and swanky hotels aplenty (and yes, the odd golf course too). If you want off the beaten track, the relatively undiscovered, and therefore completely deserted, the beaches of Comporta in the Alentejo region make for a lovely stop-off on Portugal honeymoons. What this area lacks in sophisticated, slick luxury it more than makes up for in charm and beauty. Lisbon remains a favourite of ours and is perfect mini-moon territory, or as part of a longer honeymoon to Portugal. If you're getting married in the Spring or Autumn months then the hinterland of the Alentejo makes for a perfect European option. Think rural countryside, elegant wine estates and the best ham you'll ever eat. Then there's Porto and the Douro Valley, again best in Spring and Autumn and pretty much the perfect combination of city and relaxation. Explore the cobbled streets and port warehouses of Porto before heading into the Douro Valley to relax in the beautiful hills.

Lisbon remains an Original Travel favourite and is perfect mini-moon territory, or as part of a longer honeymoon to Portugal. In fact, one of the most original (and Original) hotels in Europe is located just outside the city, the sublime Areias do Seixo.
