Itinerary Highlights

  • Explore the city’s different districts with a knowledgeable local guide
  • Discover Berlin’s no-man’s land, where artistic expression exploded after 1989
  • Use your Berlin WelcomeCard to travel freely around the city and visit its famous Museum Island
  • Stay in a historic building transformed into a boutique hotel
From the opulent to the minimal and everything in between, Berlin wears its contrasts like no other city. In four days, discover how the city’s complex history has shaped its landscape, attracting artists and architects who have helped to define the eccentric German capital.

To get you started, we’ll arrange for you to meet a local resident who’ll lead you through Berlin’s different districts: bohemian Prenzlauer Berg, radical Kreuzberg and Mitte, the city’s beating heart. You’ll also visit Tiergarten, the vast green park that offers a break from the bustling city. Your discovery of the capital will continue alongside another local guide, who’ll get you acquainted with Berlin’s no man’s land. Deemed undesirable by many, this urban area close to the Wall became home for the city’s subcultures. When Berlin emerged reunified in 1989, it was an artistic hub with open-air galleries, alternative living spaces and repurposed industrial wastelands. If you like, you can choose to visit this fascinating area by bike.

For the rest of your trip, you’ll be equipped with a handy Berlin WelcomeCard, which grants you access to free public transport in the city centre, as well as the collections on Museum Island. By the end of your stay, we’re sure you’ll view the city in a whole new light.

Where You’ll Stay

When you arrive, you’ll head to the formerly Allied-controlled West Berlin, whose super low rents attracted the country’s creatives during the Cold War. You’ll stay in a hotel that embodies Berlin’s revival, with walls made from 19th-century public buildings that underwent major architectural renovations. The entrance is via a former courthouse that looks like a castle, with a redbrick extension leading to what was once a women’s prison. Adjoining the garden, the cosy restaurant and bar is warm and welcoming, and there’s even a rooftop swimming pool where you can take a dip during the hot summer months.

Suggestions

Everything in this itinerary is entirely customisable, down to the smallest details. Here are some more suggestions of what could be included

A VISIT TO THE BOROS FOUNDATION BUNKER

Built in 1942, this former bunker is now home to the Boros Collection: a private collection of contemporary art. Impressive in both size and architecture, this building was successively a prison camp, the headquarters of the Russian secret services, a warehouse for imported fruit and a techno club. Today, it still stands in the heart of the Mitte district where it houses – across five floors and over 3,000 square ft – post-1990s contemporary art. In total, you’ll find over 57 artists exhibited within the thick walls of raw concrete. This is a remarkable way to experience Berlin, where past, present and future have been intricately intertwined.
