Inspiration for your own tailor-made trip
London - England
100% customisable for you
Begin your journey with an international flight to London, most likely overnight.
You will be met in the arrivals hall by you private driver who will transfer you to your central London Hotel. The drive should take approximately one hour, depending on traffic. On arrival to your hotel, relax and unpack at leisure.
This afternoon take a panoramic drive around London with a guide to get your bearings and see some of the top tourist sites.
This morning begins with a visit to the Tower of London. While not in The Crown as a filming location, the tower houses the Crown Jewels, many replicas were used in the TV series for events such as the Coronation and for the opening sequence. Seeing the real jewels used by monarchs past and present is mesmerising. From here your driver-guide will transfer you to Westminster Abbey, famous for weddings and coronations - feel like Duchess of Cambridge as you walk down the aisle. Ely Cathedral, which stood in for the Abbey in the TV series, will be visited later in your itinerary.
After lunch your guide departs as you head to Buckingham Palace - guiding is not allowed in the palace, but the audio guides are superb and your driver is on hand to transfer you to and from the palace.
After a leisurely breakfast, depart with your driver & guide for Greenwich. This area, steeped in Maritime history, is home to the Cutty Sark tea clipper, the Maritime Museum as well as the Prime Meridian Line and the Royal Observatory, it also offers spectacular views across the Thames. The Greenwich Naval College was used in The Crown for many of the external shots of Buckingham Palace and its courtyard. We would highly recommend making the most of the day and exploring the other attractions with your guide after you have visited the college.
If you are visiting between Wednesday and Sunday - head to one of the markets to sample something delicious for lunch.
It's up early this morning for your day trip out of London. First stop is Ely Cathedral, located approximately two hours' drive away. The cathedral was originally built in 672AD (although the current building is a mere pup, dating from 1083AD) and stood in for Westminster Abbey for the Queen's coronation and wedding day in The Crown. After your visit, journey for an hour to Knebworth House, a beautiful property owned by the same family since Tudor times, and whose the interiors stood in for Buckingham Palace in both seasons one and two. From there it is onto Hatfield House, where Elizabeth I (rather than II) grew up and which was used for interior shots of the royal residences.
After your tour your driver-guide will transfer you back to London, approximately an hour's journey.
Today Windsor Castle, the largest and oldest inhabited castle in the world, is your first stop. It has been a royal home for over 900 years and is still a working palace today. Enjoy a pub lunch in the quaint town of Windsor before trying your hand at some clay pigeon shooting, to get into the character of the Queen who is filmed on country pursuits on many different occasions during The Crown.
If you have more time, extend your trip to include Scotland where a lot of filming took place and see the places that stood in for Balmoral Castle and the Castle of Mey, and the actual Royal Yacht Britannia, moored up permanently in Edinburgh.
Your driver is on hand to transfer you to the airport for your onwards flight.
