DAY 1 Fly to Naples

Today marks the start of your family adventure to Naples, the crown jewel of Italy’s coast. After herding the whole family to the airport (a big achievement) and whizzing through security, you’ll have just the right amount of time to settle in the airport’s lounge. The flight is around three hours, the perfect time to crack the spine of a new book and distract the youngsters with a film. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by a private driver who’ll escort you to your hotel in the heart of the city. There, you can unwind and enjoy the sun terrace before heading to a family-friendly restaurant recommended by our local Concierge.

It’s time to put your history hats on because today you’re off on a full-day tour of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Travel back in time as you explore the two most renowned cities that, in 79 AD, were buried by Mount Vesuvius. In Pompeii, you’ll immerse yourself in its history as you stroll along paved roads, marvelling at frescoed houses and bustling shops. Follow your guide through the Forum, the hub of ancient life, and explore bakeries where locals grabbed bites to eat – you'll be astonished by how little, in some ways, life has changed since then. A thick layer of lava preserved buildings and materials in Herculaneum, leaving interiors and structures remarkably intact. Unlike Pompeii, Herculaneum suffered less damage, with many two-story buildings remaining relatively unscathed. Back in Naples, prepare for dinner conversation to be all about Vesuvius. Its ancient ruins aren’t something you forget in a hurry.

To feel Neapolitan, you have to be Neapolitan, which is why your third day will start at a local street market. Join your private guide as you peruse crates of fresh food and eclectic knick-knacks, engaging in lively bartering and selecting the finest ingredients for lunch. Back in the kitchen, you’ll don an apron, roll up your sleeves and learn the art of Neapolitan cooking as you prepare (then devour) a delectable four-course meal from scratch.

In the afternoon, you’ll dive further into the past to the Catacombs of San Gennaro and San Gaudisio. Until the second century, the Catacombs of San Gennaro stood as Naples' primary burial grounds, housing significant basilicas carved into the tuff (volcanic rock) to honour the patron saint. The Catacombs of San Gaudisio, located in northern Naples, were utilised by Christians as a burial site in the fourth century.

Echoing the fates of Pompeii and Herculaneum, yet devoid of the bustling crowds, Oplontis (meaning opulence) was once the domain of Roman aristocrats. Accompanied by a knowledgeable private guide, you'll explore its beautiful lava-preserved ruins firsthand. From there, it’s on to Villa Poppea, named after Nero's second wife. This complex boasts 94 rooms, thermal baths and a 60-metre swimming pool, all enveloped by an elegant garden — an idyllic setting for a leisurely afternoon. Admire the remaining exquisite sculptures and paintings, all the while immersing yourself in the ancient beauty.

For your last night in Naples, we recommend unwinding at a charming beach-side restaurant. Treat the children to gelato while you enjoy Aperol spritzes, and raise a toast to this wonderfully historic city.

DAY 5 Flight home

It’s sadly time to say ciao to Italy. After a final fill-your-boots breakfast, you’ll be whisked off to the airport by a local driver. After that, it’s just a three-hour flight standing in between you and the UK.
