Family Cape Town holidays

Cape Town's family-friendly credentials include more than just direct flights from the UK and a small time difference. Having said that, these are huge plus points, and mean Cape Town is plausible for a long weekend city break as a family, but also works brilliantly when combined with a safari elsewhere in the country, or a road trip along the Garden Route. But in terms of activities, Cape Town has so much to offer for families, whether that involves making the most of the city's natural setting by enjoying the coast or taking in some history at Robben Island.

Practical advice and inspiration to help you prepare for your holiday

Table Mountain is easily Cape Town's most iconic site, so head up in the revolving cable car (the hike might be somewhat ambitious for little legs to manage) to admire the incredible views and look out for dassies (local rock rabbits that look like giant guinea pigs). Back at ground level, we can arrange a scavenger hunt around the city so you can explore Cape Town as a family while learning about the city's fascinating past and cultural diversity. For another dose of history, take the ferry to Robben Island and learn about the prison where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years, with an ex-Apartheid prisoner as your guide.

A visit to Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens is a great option for younger children, as you can explore the beautiful estate while following a treasure map that winds along tree-top canopy walk-ways and through prehistoric gardens, which are home to life-sized dinosaur sculptures.

Along the coast there is also plenty to keep little people and parents busy, whether visiting the penguins at Boulders Beach (or one of the lesser known penguin beaches in the area); going fishing at Kalk Bay or trying your hand at surfing or boogie boarding in the safe waters of Muizenburg.

One of our favourite day trips from the city is to drive down the Cape Peninsula, looking out for the Cape Five - ostrich, baboons, mountain zebra, bontebok (a type of antelope) and tortoise - along the way, and then heading up to the Cape Point Lighthouse to enjoy amazing views over the ocean.
