Spend time on one of the wonderful working farms in the area, some of our favourites for families include Boschendal Farm, Babylonstoren and Middlevlei. Local guides will make sure that exploring the vineyards is fun for both parents and children: think spooky cellar tours and grape juice tastings (or wine for mum and dad...), as well as nature walks, bike rides and even Segway tours around the farm.

As the name would suggest, the Winelands of course produce many delicious local wines, but it''s not all about the wine, there is also fantastic food to enjoy, most of which is organic and locally grown. Middlevlei Wine Estate is the perfect place to experience a traditional South African barbeque - a boerebraii - where the children can cook ''stokbrood'' (a type of bread) over the open flames. But have no fear, there is still plenty of opportunity for wine tasting, even when you''ve got the kids in tow. Visit a local farm where the children can keep themselves busy running around outside and feeding the farm animals while you sample some local grape varieties. You could even enjoy a chocolate and wine tasting together as a family, where the children can drink grape juice.

Away from the vineyards, visit Franschhoek Motor Museum, home to over 220 classic cars, motorcycles and bicycles; or Le Bonheur Reptile Farm, where you can get up close to Nile crocodiles as well as local and exotic snakes; or for something a bit more active, walk over the beautiful Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve, admiring views over the Franschhoek Valley, which is best done at sunrise (if you can drag the children out of bed by then...).
