Humahuaca Holidays

Named after the local indigenous people, Humahuaca is a small town in the northeast province of Jujuy which, despite being the starting point for many excursions into the vividly coloured Quebrada de Humahuaca, is full to bursting with indigenous culture and local charm. The vibrant colours of the narrow mountain valley of Quebrada de Humahuaca act as a striking backdrop to many small towns along its length. With its multi-coloured striped rocks, it’s not hard to see why the area has been named a UNESCO World Heritage site. Humahuaca holidays mean adventure filled days and chilly nights. A typical Andean village, it lies at an altitude of over 9,000ft, the cobbled streets hum with the hustle and bustle of everyday life, while restaurants are filled the strumming of folk musicians. This place is not gear towards tourism, which is part of its charm – holidays here are authentic and real. A visit to La Candelaria church is a must - it contains a wonderfully gaudy gold altarpiece, and some captivating Cusqueño paintings. Make sure you are there at noon - tourists gather outside the neo-colonial town hall to see the mechanical figure of Francisco Solano emerge to bless the town from an alcove high in the wall. This place is extraordinary – prepare to come home with some seriously cool stories and an extra poncho or two.
