Nubra Valley holidays

The elongated Nubra Valley, found in India’s Ladakh region, cuts between mighty snow-capped mountains and starkly beautiful scenery. It’s a place of extremes, where glaciers melt into ice lakes and mountains tower above you on either side, ideal for those after a touch of adventure. Local communities once thrived in this barren and inhospitable landscape, by creating an extraordinary trans-Himalayan trade which became part of the Silk Road. The route starts off in Xian, passing through the Nubra Valley’s challenging highlands, and can be walked today. The valley is home to many ancient Buddhist monasteries and temples, and you can visit the Tiskit Monastery, a Buddhist monastery near the village of Hunder, which was founded in the 14th century and was once blessed by the Dalai Lama. Its purpose is to protect the village, prevent a war with Pakistan and promote world peace. The footpaths of the Nubra Valley rise to 17,300 ft above sea level - but there are more gentle paths that offer mesmerizing views of surrounding mountains and river valleys. Or if your feet need a break, explore the desert on a Bactrian camel, just as merchants once did along the Silk Road.
