Between the warm Pacific coast and the seemingly endless desert lies Trujillo's historical centre. Bursting with beautiful beaches, colonial structures and spectacular museums, some containing ancient archaeological finds, this city is a fascinating place to visit as part of a Peru itinerary. Trujillo, founded in 1534 by Francisco Pizarro (who arrived here with a group of 100 Spaniards), was once the capital of the Chimu Kingdom—an ancient city made entirely out of mud-brick and adobe. Take a tour through the huge adobe complex of Chan Chan with a local guide and marvel at the archaeological treasures the abandoned city houses, including temples, plazas and cemeteries. The ancient pyramids of the Sun and the Moon and Arco Iris Temple offer history buffs a comprehensive view into the past, allowing them to interpret petroglyphs of the daily lives of the Chimu and learn about their stubborn fight against the Incas.
