Tanzania Family Safari Holidays

Home to the iconic Serengeti National Park and the extensive Selous Game Reserve (the largest reserve in Africa), Tanzania is up there with the best of the best when it comes to family safari destinations. This is before even mentioning the stunning Spice Islands, which make for a perfect post-safari beach retreat. On a Tanzania family safari, your private guide will organise game drives to fit with your family routine and take you to all of the top lookouts for spotting the ‘Big Five’ (lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalos). To add to the ever-growing list of wildlife sightings, your safari could also take place from the comfort of a boat on the Rufiji river, for glimpses of hippos, crocodiles and white pelicans. With the choice of two safari circuits, only a two-hour time difference with the UK, and a selection family-friendly lodges, Tanzania is the perfect location for introducing your little ones to the real-life cast of the Lion King (with special appearances from many more creatures, big and small).

"We had a wonderful time! Our guide was amazing - he really did make sure we had the best experience and animal sightings. The Tarangire Park was especially brilliant, but we loved them all as they were all so different. We all thoroughly enjoyed the night safari - we saw lots and it was a great experience. The accommodation was great and the welcome we had at each camp was fabulous. We have had a really wonderful holiday. Thank you so much for another great trip. "

"Excellent balancing of days spent on the right locations, matching our expectations in terms of quality and strategic location. Bakari the Concierge was very responsive and helped us organise a last minute day activity in Stone Town. Our safari driver/guides were simply outstanding and made a difference when spotting animals in the national parks. We loved our complimentary honeymoon dinner on the beach organised by you, thanks again!"

"We had the most amazing time in Tanzania, it really was so special, thank you so much for organising such an amazing trip. Jabali ridge was incredibly special. They went above and beyond to look after us and it definitely will remain one of my favourite places I’ve been. I really can’t say better things about the hotel and the staff. The chef was truly incredible and so considerate about all of our requests. Zanzibar was also beautiful, and the staff again were just impeccable. Hotel was stunning and it was all round an amazing week. Thank you so much for organising our sunset dhow, it was such a treat and was a highlight of the trip. Really appreciate all your help and thanks again for the best holiday. "

The natural beauty of Tanzania’s landscapes and national parks is breath-taking, even without the addition of incredible wildlife. However, it’s the combination of the two which make it a superb safari destination, especially for a family holiday. A Tanzania family safari promises some unforgettable experiences; from enjoying panoramic views of never-ending grasslands or the vast caldera of the Ngorongoro Crater, to watching herds of zebra and wildebeest traversing the Serengeti during the annual Great Migration (attracting thousands of leopards, lions and cheetahs to the region). Starting with the Serengeti, your safari can begin the moment you arrive, as your personal guide will point out wildlife during the transfer to your lodge. Safety, privacy and comfort take precedence on our family safari holidays, and the region’s exclusive-use safari lodges deliver on all fronts.

Onto the southern safari circuit, the Selous Game Reserve covers 19,000 square miles – making it four times bigger than the Serengeti – although despite its impressive size, it remains one of the continent’s best-kept secrets. The UNESCO World Heritage site encompasses an array of habitats, such as Miombo woodlands, riverine forests and sprawling grasslands, while animals endemic to the reserve include elephants, rhinos, cheetahs and giraffes. Exchange your 4x4 for a boat on the Rufiji river and drift past malachite kingfishers, African fish eagles and black winged stilts. Our safari experts will work with the local guides to design an itinerary which suits your family routine, ensuring that activities appeal to every age group.

A Tanzania family safari can include more than game drives and wildlife watching (as wonderful as these are), with a visit to the Zanzibar Archipelago in the Indian Ocean added on to the end of your trip. Known colloquially as the Spice Islands, Pemba, Zanzibar and Mafia are heavenly havens consisting of pristine beaches and sky-blue waters. For youngsters, there’s kayaking, swimming and snorkelling around the islands’ vibrant coral reefs, while Mum and Dad can enjoy some well-deserved spa relaxation and time spent lounging by the private pool.
