Discover different ways to explore Japan
Practical advice and inspiration to help you prepare for your holiday
January and February are generally the best time to hit the slopes, with skiers and snowboarders from all over the world flocking on a Japan snow holiday for a chance to experience its powdery white slopes.
Experience the bullet train at full speed as you race through the countryside to the Japanese Alps in central Honshu. Home to some of the highest mountains in Japan, the Japanese Alps are popular with experienced skiers and boarders looking for a challenge. The snow is (more often than not) perfect and the runs are long. The Japanese Alps are home to some of the best ski resorts in Japan, offering a range of runs for people of all levels. If your legs are aching after a day on the slopes, relax in one of the many steamy hot springs (onsens), or spend an afternoon whizzing around on a toboggan.
Nestled in the Japanese Alps, Hakuba is covered with dense forests and alpine-like terrain, making it the perfect place to get your adrenaline pumping. It's also a great base for exploring the rest of the prefecture; nearby towns like Nozawa Onsen and Myoko boast some of the best skiing in all of Japan.
Located on the country’s most northerly island, Hokkaido receives around 14 metres of powder each year and boasts some of the best skiing in Japan. While the snow is deep, Japan’s mellow terrain (compared to Europe's steep Alps at least) makes it perfect for learning new tricks.
The nearby ski resort of Niseko is surrounded by pristine wilderness and offers a plethora of off-piste activities. With unparalleled tree runs, world-class conditions and stunning sunsets over Mount Yotei, Niseko is sure to take your breath away.
