Okavango Delta & Beyond Holidays

After winding its way through Angola and Namibia, the great Okavango River spills not into a lake or sea, but into a vast spread of the Kalahari Desert. And there its waters are dispersed in a breathtakingly beautiful maze of water: virgin islands floating on a sea of water lilies; reeds and papyrus shooting up through palm-green water - all teeming with big game and a myriad of other wildlife species. Our small luxury camps offer extraordinary access to this watery wonderland, each specialising in a different blend of animals, landscapes and activities. Some are accessible only by a tiny plane, while from others you can set forth straight from the water’s edge in a Mokoro (dugout canoe). For a safari getaway with a difference, Okavango Delta holidays are hard to top.

Okavango Delta & Beyond Guide

Practical advice and inspiration to help you prepare for your holiday

What is the best option for an Okavango Delta holiday?

Original Travel has visited all the exclusive luxury camps found on the edge of lagoons or tucked beside the waterways, and each offers a spectacular Okavango Delta safari holiday experience. The camps invariably accommodate only a small number of guests at any one time, ensuring an intimate and personal atmosphere, and each offers something slightly different in terms of wildlife, scenery and activities: some areas are renowned for their high concentration of predators; others offer a blend of desert aridity and floodplains.

One or two luxury camps offer extraordinary riding safaris, where guests can explore the Okavango Delta on horseback. Mobile safaris are also a wonderful option to explore the region as the camp moves with the game, your comfort is not compromised and the intellectual journey is seamless because you have the same guides throughout the trip.

Depending on the season, game-viewing is also conducted by 4x4 vehicles and guided walks, while during the annual floods, the narrow waterways of the delta are best explored by traditional mokoro dugout canoes with experienced guides pointing out the abundant wildlife, from fish eagles circling above to buffalo drinking at the water's edge. On the subject of fish eagles, we can arrange opportunities for dedicated bird watching safaris in the Okavango Delta as well.
