USA Visa Information
British citizens need to apply for an Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) at least 72 hours prior to travel to the USA, otherwise entry will be refused. Most British citizens are allowed to visit for up to 90 days under the US Visa Waiver Programme (VWP). Certain exemptions for entry under the VWP and existing ESTAs may apply for anyone who has travelled to Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Syria, Libya, Somalia or Yemen since March 2011. If you do not qualify for an ESTA, you’ll need to apply for a visa from the US Embassy in the UK.
Passport Validity for USA Travel
Your passport should be valid for the entirety of your stay in the USA. All visitors entering the USA under the VWP must hold an ePassport.
Other Important Information
Various strict security measures are in place when travelling to the USA. Certain electronic devices may be subject to additional checks by security personnel – these devices include large phones (those exceeding 16cmx9.3cmx1.5cm), laptops, tablets, e-readers, power cables and their transformers. Devices may be confiscated or destroyed for various reasons, including: if they’ve been tampered with; if they cannot be removed from a protective case; if they trigger the explosives trace detection alarm; if there is internal or external damage to the device. Where possible, leave devices at home or place them in your hold luggage. Please note, batteries and power banks cannot be put into hold luggage, so must be carried in your hand luggage. As well as restrictions on liquids in hand luggage, there are strict rules around powders – travellers are limited to 350ml (340g or 12oz) of powder, which must fit into your one litre clear plastic liquids bag. Larger quantities must go in your checked baggage. Exceptions apply to organic powders, including baby formula, human remains (please bring a death certificate) and powdered medication (accompanied with a letter from your GP).
