Inland Belize Holidays

Rainforest and pine forests, abundant wildlife and Mayan sites make Inland Belize holidays an exciting and adventurous possibility, alongside time spent on the coast of this lovely Central American country. The main areas of interest are the Cayo District, Mountain Pine Ridge and Orange Walk. Some of the best, more remote rainforest lodges can be found in the Orange Walk district with wonderful wildlife spotting opportunities in the jungle scenery as well as on the various river excursions. The Mayan site of Lamanai is found in this region too.

What is there to do in Inland Belize?

A trip to Belize would not be complete without venturing away from the beaches to the forests and archaeological sites of Inland Belize. Pine forest are not normally associated with Caribbean countries but Belize has several hundred square miles of pines. The 300 square mile Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve can be explored on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback, following the extensive network of forest trails. The reserve contains diverse environments that are home to iguanas, howler monkeys, and numerous species of birds and butterflies. The landscapes of the Cayo District range from lush rainforest to rolling farmland hills crisscrossed by rivers and dotted with caves, making this somewhere adventure sports abound. Many of the dramatic caves of Inland Belize were once important sites for Mayan ceremonies, and you can even still find some Maya artefacts within them. Depending on how adventurous you're feeling, these caves can either be explored in a kayak, a rubber ring (known as tubing), or on foot. Alternatively, try your hand at biking, canoeing and riding (particularly when staying at the lovely Blancaneaux), before exploring the region's many Mayan sites such as Caracol, Xunantunich & Cahal Pech, all in the company of one of our expert guides. Of these, the unmissable Mayan gem is Caracol, which today covers thirty square miles of jungle where over 35,000 ruins have been identified, with many more yet to be uncovered.
